Reflections in the Raine

Someone cancelled our Christmas and forgot to tell us why
Officer Betts crossed the thin blue line to the patrol division in the sky.

“Mommie, why are you sad today?” our four year old asks
I look into her innocent face and began a daunting task

“Alicyn, an officer died at work today and he was daddy’s friend.”
I try to rush the words out before the tears fall again.

“Alicyn, this is hard for mommie because it’s been such a long while
since the East Point Police family spent Christmas with no smile.”

With her big brown eyes she pats my back and then begins to speak
“Mommie, he’s an angel now,” and she points up to the sky.
“See, he’s holding Autumn Raine so you don’t have to cry. My sister needed someone who would laugh and hold her hand and since God wouldn’t let you go he picked a special man.”

I watched as she rose from the floor and went to the window to blow a kiss
“Who are you blowing kisses to?”
“To the special man that we all miss.”

Yet another Blue Angel has been recalled to guard Heaven. In the Holyest of Seasons a guardian has been taken. I pray for love and Peace for Officer Betts's wife and newborn son. May his son grow up in a kinder and gentler world because of his fathers sacrifice.
I pray that he will grow up to be a fine man, and take the place of his father protecting other's children.
I hope that the East Point Police Department knows that they are in all our prayers. Officer Betts's sacrifice will NEVER be forgotten.

As I sit here trying to find the words to express my sympathy, I realize that I can not say anything that will ease your pain. In this world of misguided idols and so called superstars, we know who the real heros are. Our thoughts are with you.
