Reflections for Deputy Sheriff David Alan Powell

Hi Uncle Dave,

I was just thinking about you today. I don't know what it was but you just popped into my head all of a sudden and it made me smile. I think you were saying hello to me in some ways.

Even though I didn't get to see you and Aunt Emma often because I lived in Atlanta, I now live here in Phoenix and I try and go see everyone once a year or so. They talk about you often, and last time I was there I got to go see your final resting place. I felt at peace visiting you. I think it was because I know you are up in heaven with my dad as well. I often wonder if you and my dad "talk" about everyone up in heaven. We sure do miss you guys down here.

Keep watch over us. We love you

I am recruit Marquez with Academy Class #394. On Friday, our staff instructors took us to the memorial wall located at the academy in Whittier. They gave us the option of choosing a peace officer that passed away in the line of duty and shine their plaque. I chose Deputy Powell. Our class ramrod, Deputy Bowley, told me the story behind the incident and his heroic story had a profound affect on me. So from this day I to pledge to keep his memory alive by continuing to tell his story. I will keep him and his family in my prayers.

Dave,

Today marks 10 years since we lost you as our leader and gained you as our angel. Your memory is ever present in my actions and decisions as I remember what you taught me and apply your wisdom to my life all the time.

The family is doing well. Mom supportes everything, all the time. She is our backbone. Brianna is the most amazing blessing ever. She's a senior this year, it's hard to believe she'll be in college next year! She started driving a while ago....she's the tiniest driver ever and it's adorable! Mandi is managing now and Moe's an in-home nurse. All the kids are doing well and growing into young adults. You would be so proud of us all.

You are loved, missed and remembered by many. Your legacy lives on in us and in your brothers and sister who wear the badge.

See you 'in the air!'

Much Love,
"Tiger"

I work with a group of detectives who participate every year in helping David's widow. They have keep the tradition alive not to forget David's sacrafice and to help his family. We all worked Lakewood Station together years ago, but every year everyone remembers, no matter where they now work.

Dave,

It's been 9 years since your EOW and we miss you so much every day. Mom is doing good, she's dating now and being smart about it. Bri, oh my gosh, she is amazing beyond words. She's been in theater, music, and dance every year and she has the voice of an angel. Honestly, I think she's singing to you most of the time. Mandi is going to be a nurse soon and so is Moe. The kids are all growing up too fast! Nate, Joey and Isaac talk about you often and remind each other of the fun they had with you playing lion king and reading to them. Isaac feels like he knew you just as much as his brothers did because of all the stories they tell.

I miss you tremendously, we all do. I just always think that things would not be as crappy if you were still here. Laughing kind of lost it joy and happiness lost its sparkle.

I know that you are praising Our Lord as you will do for all eternity and we will all be a family again soon.

Love you so much!!

Dave,

I did a ride along with you back in 1999. It was my first ride a long and you helped introduce me to law enforcement. I am now a police officer with the Long Beach Police Department, been on for 6 years now. Just wanted to say thanks and I'm still think about you.

Dave it's just shy of six years now, since you were taken. Funny how things happen, just the other day I was thinking about you and that "shit eating grin" you always had. I remember one day after briefing, you approached me in the locker room with your "helmet on" and that famous grin. Dave you were always trying to be funny and you were, you had a great outlook on this job and I try everyday to do the same. You would be proud, I still to this day put my patrol cap on the passenger side head rest when im 10-8; all you guys at Lakewood Station taught me a lot. Take care brother.

Dave,

It has been many years since you walked the compounds of PHR-Medium as "Inspector Gadget." You were constantly preparing for your eventual transfer to patrol. I enjoyed working with you and learning from you. You were taken away much too soon, but you will never be forgotten.

Dave, I think about you all the time. I just received word that an old classmate from high school had been killed in the line of duty. She was a good cop, just like you. Both of you will be taking care of each other upstairs, I know it.

Everyone should take time to reflect on this 5th anniversary of Dave’s death and think about his family, the fun times you had at work with him, his up-lifting cheer and how he could always make everyone laugh. I miss his laughter greatly. I don’t think there has been a day that has gone by that I havent thought about how sad this incident made our law enforcement brotherhood.
I urge everyone look into the faces of those who work around you and know that they might be gone in an instant. Close your eyes, see the all of the fallen heroes, the face of Dave Powell or another friend who has fallen...and pray that God never stops sending such people to serve and live among us.
We should give thanks for those who follow paths of great risk that make our life better. Ponder for a moment, the nature of the sacrifices we make for freedom.

God Bless

Dave, I never had the honor to meet you or your family but I wanted to tell you how sorry I am for not being there for you. I responded to that same 245N call that started in Norwalk and ended in your RD. I was right behind you in the next yard over when you were taken from us. Words can't explain how I felt that day and continue to feel almost five years later. I dedicate my shift every day to you and your family. God bless you, your family, and every other man or woman who puts on that badge every day and does the Lords work.
