Reflections for Deputy Sheriff David Alan Powell

To the family of David Powell,

I am sorry to hear of your loss. I pray that your grief is lessened by knowing that David died in the line of duty, while performing a heroic deed. I am confident that his actions and life's story will live on even though he has left us. We never know the impact our lives have on those people whom we come in contact with. With 18 years on the department, you can be certain David touched many. His loss will be felt for a long time.

God Bless you and keep you.
As the Psalms say, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your path straight."

Sergeant Vicki Coffman
Los Angeles County Sheriff Department

Do not stand at my grave and weep

I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumns rain
I am the swift uplifting rush, of quiet birds circled in flight
I am the soft star that shines at night
I am the flowers that bloom by day
I am the fragrance of new mown hay
I am each blade of grass that grows
I am the rush of melting snow

Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there, I did not die.

To his family, friends, and fellow Deputies, he will be with you in your hearts and memories to keep you sustained in the most difficult time in our law enforcement family. You will be in our prayers.
I had the priveledge of a ride-a-long while in LA a few years ago with Brian in the West Hollywood sector, I was impressed with the LA County Sheriff's Department and the professionalism of the Deputies I met. I will never forget that 12 hour shift and learned what the "big city guys" see and the dangers they faced everyday. I enjoyed the experience, but was glad to get back home. Thank you Deputy Powell, tell Billy (EOW 11-13-01 JCSO KY) he is missed every day. Isaiah 40:31
J. V. Jackson former Fayette County Deputy Sheriff Lexington, Kentucky

I will carry a bit of your courage all the days of my career. I will forget your name not.
I will carry the burden of your death with me every day that I draw a breath.
Rest assured, you will give me the resolve to carry on the fight that you so rightfully stood for.
You have steeled my resolve to stand strong in the face of danger.
I will not ever forget you or what you died for.
Rest peacefully my fallen Brother.
The beat goes on.

DEPUTY SHERIFF
L.A.S.D.

Today was difficult, it's tuesday after Dave's death, and a few days from getting ready to say our final goodbyes to him and I just couldn't focus and do my job. I can only imagine the pain and sorrow that Dave's family must feel, I hope they gain some solace knowing that all of us who knew him and worked with him, thought very highly of him. I know I'll remember the last time I spoke to him when we were sitting in court the Wednesday before his sacrifice. I'll miss that unique laugh, his humor and smile, and his loyalty and friendship in the field.
God Bless his family and close friends, I pray he will watch over the rest of us from above.

Deputy Raymond Mades
Los Angeles County Sheriff

I remember meeting Dave when he backed me up one time. He was right there, he came out of nowhere. I will never forget that. Thats how I saw Dave. A partner who would be there at every call, no matter what. I know he will be missed by all of us at LKD. I would like to say "Thanks again for the back-up, Sir". RIP 134T1/D
Deputy Richard M. Torres

Deputy Sheriff
LASD

Dave,
I only had the opportunity to work with you for 11 Months, but in those 11 Months you were always approachable and kind to the New Deputy's in the field. It is a shame that those who do not respect Law Enforcement feel the need to harm us. You gave the ultimate sacrifice in trying to do what you believed in the most, that is being a great Law Enforcement officer. All of us at Lakewood Station will cherish the time we had to work with you. I will not forget the heroic event of you pulling a people out of a burning car, several months ago in the city of Bellflower, who were suspects to a carjacking. I spoke with you shortly after the event and I was in awe of how you did not even have a second thought of putting your life in danger to save a person from a burning car. I will always keep you in my heart and never forget my the last briefing I had the opportunity to spend with you.. You are in a better place now, be our angel from above and protect us down here.

Dave, over ten years ago I came to Lakewood station and worked with you in the Long Beach project and other cities. The memories of your infectious laugh and "Let's go gettem" attitude, I will cherish forever. I thank you for those memories. I am honored to have worked next to you and to have shared things about our families during our talks. I will miss you, and am grateful that I can say that you were a friend of mine. I pray for God to comfort your family in this time of need. I know you will be walking the streets of Heaven and as you look down and continue to protect us, please remember you will never be forgotten. What you have done in this world, has made a difference! I am at a loss of what to say...to the family, know Dave was a great person. I had the pleasure of working with him at Lakewood from 1989 to 1992, always witty always kind, a great Deputy, a blast to be around...Know he did not die in vein but saving a life, He would want to be remebered that way, THE HERO THAT HE IS.

To the staff at Lakewood...Those that know me and dont, I am in deep pain with you. All of you please be strong... you are the best in L.A. and will recover. God this hurts losing someone you know. As I sit and cry with you, I can only remeber the good times and I ask you all be strong and remeber only those times also.

I am here for you and thinking of you all...
