Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Senior Trooper Charles Mark Cosslett

I'll always remember you, great rider. You had the fastest motor in the VSP motor unit! I retired on my motor in 2003. I was one of the lucky motormen who made it out in one piece after 9 years in the saddle. What a great job being a motorman!!!!!
Rest in peace brother

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; for whoever sheds his blood with me shall be my brother. Mark, you will forever be my brother. I thank God that I had the honor of knowing your friendship and loyalty. My loyalty to you did not end at your grave, while others of lesser morals and beliefs have forgotten, I have not. I only hope that your children will one day know the kind of Man their Father was, and how much you loved them. Looking at them is so hard because I see so much of you in them. They are your children, and it pains me not to be able to watch them grow up. I know God has more important things for you now, but I miss my best friend. So ride on Brother, ride on, I'll continue to keep the faith here until We meet again....

One of "Virginia's finest" less a fallen
Brother whom I will never forget......

Mark,
I didnt know you, but i have worked in Division 7 for a little over two years now, and thought you should know you are not forgotten. I was at the academy and was looking at your portrait just wanted to thank you for paying the ultimate price.

Mark, bro, has it really been 4 years now? How's "Evo" doing, dude? You taking good care of him for me and Tina? I told a Honolulu motorman to look you up. Show him the ropes up there, will you?

Now riding a peace officer edition Road King. When the weather changes I'll ride it down to you for you to check it out.

And don't worry, the Boozefighters still toast to you every month! BOOZEFIGHTERS UP!

My thoughts are with your loved ones on this 4th anniversary of your end of watch. I know the tears still flow from the many broken hearts that were left behind. Keep watch over your loved ones and those still out on patrol watching over the Thin Blue Line. You are a true hero and heroes never die. You will never be forgotten.

Mark,
I just took the written exam June 17th. On the way down I spotted your memorial on the roadside,it made me reflect on the hardtimes this country was going through,9/11,and the cowards who were terrorizing the D.C. area. Mark your legacy lives on through the many lives you touched.Thank you for your service to your country and to the citizens of Virginia.

You once said to me "I wish I could do what you can do", and I replied, "No, I wish I could do what you do........"

You loved what you did.

I hope wherever you are there are no flats, broken drive belts, fouled plugs, leaky cylinder base gaskets or slipping clutches.

I MET MARK A LONG TIME AGO. WE WERE NEIGHBORS. HE AND I WERE ON DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS BUT AT HE SAME STAGE IN OUR CAREERS, WE ONLY HAD A FEW YEARS ON. MY HUSBAND, ALSO A COUNTY OFFICER, AND I KNEW MARK BEFORE HE MET LESLIE. THE FIRST TIME WE MET LESLIE SHE MADE A GREAT IMPRESSION UPON US. SHE WAS SO MUCH LIKE MARK. THEY WERE TRUELY A COUPLE.

MARK WAS A WONDERFUL PERSON. VERY FULL OF LIFE AND FUN. HE WAS ALWAYS LAUGHING AND HAD A SMILE ON HIS FACE. HOWEVER WHEN IT WAS TIME TO BE SERIUOS HE WAS. I WAS FREQUENTLY CALLED TO SEARH FEMALE SUBJECTS FOR MARK WHEN HE NEEDED HELP. WE WERE ON DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS BUT WORKED THE SAME AREA A LOT.

MARK WAS ALWAYS THERE TO HELP ANYONE THAT NEEDED IT. HE DIDN'T CARE WHO YOU WERE, HE WAS THERE.

I WAS WORKING THE NIGHT MARK DIED, AS I WAS RESPONDING TO THE SCENE I KNEW A VA STATE MOTORMAN HAD DIED. IT NEVER OCCURED TO ME IT MIGHT BE MARK. I THOUGHT HE WAS STILL UNDERCOVER, LATER I FOUND OUT HE LEFT THAT ASSIGNMENT A SHORT TIME BEFORE HIS DEATH. WHEN I FOUND OUT IT WAS HIM IT WAS LIKE SOME ONE JUST RIPPED MY HEART OUT AND KNOCK ME TO THE GROUND AT THE SAME TIME. IF I HAD NOT HAD OTHER OFFICERS NEARBY I WOULD HAVE LITERALLY FALLEN TO MY KNEES. AS I LOOKED AROUND THERE WERE MANY OTHER OFFICERS FROM MY DEPARTMENT AND THE STATE POLICE THAT KNEW MARK VERY WELL. WE WERE ALL IN DEEP SHOCK. HOW COULD SOMEONE SO FULL OF LIFE SUDDENLY BE TAKEN AWAY FROM US LIKE THIS. MY BIGGEST THOUGHT WAS ABOUT LESLIE AND THE KIDS. I KNEW THE STATE POLICE WERE ON THE WAY TO NOTIFY LESLIE, AND I TOOK SOME COMFORT IN THAT. I STILL DON'T KNOW HOW LESLIE HANDLED ALL THIS, AND I HAVE TALKED TO HER ABOUT IT SEVERAL TIMES. SHE IS AN AMAZING LADY!!! MARK KNEW THAT. HE LOVED HER AND THE KIDS MORE THAN CAN BE SAID.

I FREQUENTLY THINK OF MARK. ESPECAILLY WHEN I TRIM THE BUSHES AT HOME. ONE WINTER MARK DECIDED TO PLOW THE DRIVEWAY. HE GOT THE KABOTA STUCK IN THE BUSHES-SIDEWAYS. THE BUSHES WERE DAMAGED, BUT SURVIVED. MARK SOMETIMES HAD TO LEARN THINGS THE HARD WAY. FOR SEVERAL YEARS HE TOOK HIS JEEP BEHIND OUR HOMES. HE ALWAYS MANAGED TO GET IT STUCK IN THE CREEK BED DURING LATE WINTER/EARLY SPRING. ONCE HE HAD TO WAIT SEERAL WEEKS BEFORE HE COULD GET IT OUT OF THE MUD. WE COULDN'T EVEN PULL IT OUT...WE STILL LAUGH AT THAT!!!

MARK LEFT A LOT OF WONDERFUL MEMORIES FOR MANY PEOPLE. HE INFLUENCED PEOPLE IN WAYS HE WILL NEVER KNOW. HE IS OFTEN MISSED.

MARK,I KNOW IT'S BEEN AWHILE SINCE YOU DIED. YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. YOU ARE NOT JUST REMEMBERED ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF YOUR DEATH. YOU, LESLIE AND THE KIDS ARE ALWAYS IN MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.

Being a motorman is what you loved. Unless you have been one, no one knows the feeling. Being involved in a crash in 1996, I was fortunate enough to continue, but not on what I loved to do...ride. You are on the ULTIMATE motor squad now. Rest easy Brother and watch over us. I will look forward to seeing your Ultimate motor wings. Until we meet...

I think about you often Mark. One thing I told myself after the first year with the State Police was, I would not be a motor man. The more I got to know that being a Motor Man was much more than riding a motorcycle, I knew it was for me. I idolized you when you were a NARC. We had some fun times together on those assignments. I barely recognized you when you came back to wearing a uniform. But you clean up well. Watch over me as I begin my motor career. I hope I can make you proud. Thanks for the inspiration brother...
