God bless, brother. Though you are gone from here, heroes never die. Thank you for your service and know that you will never be forgotten.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer. Today, August 29, 2003 we dedicated the shift to the memory of P.O. Michael Janson Barwick who died on this date one year ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Officer Barwick's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Mike I still cant except that you are gone. I just returned from the Police Memorial in D.C. and when I saw your name on that wall I lost it! I can still remember you, Dustin, and I sitting at Laffayette Bar and Grill 2 days before you were taken from us. We were sucking down Coronas and shooting the breeze about work and I thought" this is great we did it we are both living the dream we used to talk about when we were in college". I remembered you called me after i got off at 10 and I was weary about going out. Something told me to get off my butt and go. I'm glad I did. And finally I remember leaving and telling you good bye. That moment haunts me as I sit and type this message. You will always be with me in my heart and in my mind and I know one day I WILL see you again. I'm still in pain and I will carry that with me for the rest of my life, but, at least I have the millions of memories of our time spent together on this earth to help me cope. I love you BROTHER you are going to be missed.

DON'T GRIEVE FOR ME FOR NOW I'M FREE
I'M FOLLOWING THE PATH GOD LAID FOR ME
I TOOK HIS HAND WHEN I HEARD HIM CALL
I TURNED MY BACK AND LEFT IT ALL

I COULD NOT STAY ANOTHER DAY
TO LAUGH, TO LOVE, TO WORK OR PLAY
TASKS LEFT UNDONE MUST STAY THAT WAY
I FOUND THAT PEACE AT THE CLOSE OF DAY

IF MAY PARTING HAS LEFT A VOID
THEN FILL IT WITH REMEMBERED JOY
OF FRIENDSHIPS SHARED, A LAUGH, A KISS
OH YES, THESE THINGS I TOO WILL MISS

BE NOT BURDONED WITH TIMES OF SORROW
I WISH YOU THE SUNSHINE OF TOMORROW
MY LIFE'S BEEN FULL, I SAVORED MUCH
GOOD FRIENDS, GOOD TIMES, A LOVED ONE'S TOUCH

PERHAPS MY TIME SEEMED ALL TOO BRIEF
DON'T LENGTHEN IT NOW WITH UNDUE GRIEF
LIFT UP YOUR HEART AND SHARE WITH ME
GOD WANTED ME NOW, HE SETS ME FREE.

Scott

Someone from my department just sent me this website, and for that I am grateful. Mike loved this job more than anything in world, and we would spend hours sitting in my backyard talking about our days and nights 'on the job'. To my fellow men and women in blue, thank you for the kind words and please be careful out there. To Mike, I knew when you came into my life that I had found something eternal. Somehow, with the help of those around me, I will find a way through my grief because I know that's what you'd want. I love you more than anything in this world, and your memory will stay alive in my heart forever.

Rest in peace my brother, Lord knows that you knew no peace here. May the wind always be at your back.

I never thought it would be me,
My name for all of eternity.
Recorded here at this hallowed place,
Alas, my name, no more my face.
"In the line of duty" I hear them say,
My family now the price to pay.
My folded flag stained with tears,
We only had those few short years.
The badge no longer on my chest,
I sleep now in eternal rest.
My sword I pass to those behind
And pray they keep this thought in mind.
I never dreamed it would be me.
And with a heavy heart and bent knee,
I ask for all here from the past...
Dear God, let my name be the last.

Mike helped to arm his community from fear in the protection he gave through duty. I hope that his family, friends and co-workers can find some measure of comfort in this. My thought and prayers are with you all in your time of loss.

I was visiting/introducing my fiance' to my family in my home town of St. Louis, Missouri, when I heard of the tragic death of yet another true American hero. Officer Barwick's tragic death is yet another reminder of the dangers of our chosen profession. Yet, we have seen that he was a truly dedicated police officer whose loyalty and desire to serve his community was noteworthy, that he once said that "catching the bad guys is fun!" Too many times we forget why we chose our profession and we get so trapped in the muck and mire of procedures, liability concerns, etc., that it is refreshing to see one who still had the vim and vigor to do his job with enthusiasm. To the family of Officer Barwick, please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers, and will be always. To Officer Barwick's partner, may God grant you strength and courage to face the days ahead. And to our brothers and sisters in blue of the St. Louis Police Department, please know that brothers and sisters around the world are lifting you up and embracing you as you cope with this tragedy. You make us all proud and honored to call St. Louis home.

Mike left us way too soon... he will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Mike,

It seems like it was only yesterday that I was speaking to you while I was working one of your crime scenes. I had to work the accident scene that took you from us. My heart sank when I heard you were gone and Jenna was critically injured.

I will always remember your smile, laugh and sense of humor while we spoke. You will never be forgotten by your friends and fellow officers.

God bless you always, Mike.

Thank you, Officer Barwick, watch our backs, it is getting close to the end when we will all be together and we won't be worried about criminals...
RIP

As I move into my own law enforcement career, I'm continuously reminded of just how inherently dangerous the duty is. However, I continue to move forward, as you did, accepting the danger because we feel drawn to the duty. May God send his guardian angels to ease the suffering of your family and grant them peace. For now, rest easy brother - we'll continue the watch for you.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Officer Barwick. You have a long road ahead of you and it wont be easy! Just know that he is in a much better place now and he is among other 'heros'. My heart goes out to his family and co-workers, I know how they must feel & my heart hurts with them, as I lost my husband in the line of duty last year and so I know what it is like to lose a dearly loved one, and I also am a deputy with the same agency that my husband worked for, so I know what it is like to lose a co-worker (our agency has lost 4 in less than 2 years - including my husband)
just know that God is with you in every step you take!
