At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer. Tonight, August 22, 2003 we dedicated the shift to the memory of P.O. Crystal Sheffield who died on this date one year ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Officer Sheffield's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Sgt. Paul Bissonnette
Royal Canadian Mounted Police - Surrey, BC

Someday we will be with our loved ones in Heaven, until then- you are amoung loved ones here on Earth that care about you and hurt with you in your grief.

My deepest sympathy goes out to her family, co-workers and friends. It never gets any easier when a law enforcement officer is lost. A special bond makes all of us feel like we have lost a member of our own family. May you rest in peace.

Cpl Peter Kwiatkowski
Military Police, 8 Wing Trenton, Ontario, Canada

I sat next to Crystal in the police academy. When the rest of the class would mope and whine, Sheffield refused to take part in the petty games common among 50 people cooped up in the same room for too long. “I love everybody here,” she would say. And she meant it too. She was police for all the right reasons. And her smile was always there (except when pointing out that I ate too much garlic). My sympathies to her entire family, especially her son and sister, both of whom inspired her deeply.

P/O Peter Moskos
Baltimore City Police Dept

Another officer has fallen but not in vain. My deepest sympathy to the family, friends and co-workers of Officer Sheffield. May you find strength in your heart and may the Lord comfort you during this time.
Rest in peace for your watch is over.

US Park Ranger Catroppa
National Park Service Kennesaw GA

I send my deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Sheffield. A special prayer goes out to her son and husband. The thin blue line is a little thinner with this Officer's passing. The International Association of Women Police salutes this fine young officer who held so much promise and died doing the job she loved. Godspeed Crystal.

Officer Donna C. Hillier
Purdue University Calumet Police Department - Hammond, IN

MY Deepest sympathies....I'm very sorry for your loss...

My sincere condolences to the Sheffield family and the Officers of the Baltimore City Police Department. I am greatly saddened by your loss, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time. May God give you the strength and courage to get through this difficult time, and the years to come. Although our brotherhood has suffered a tremendous loss, we know that Crystal is now safe in Gods arms guarding the gates of Heaven. God Bless you Crystal, for all that you have been, and for all that you have meant, to the people whose lives you have touched..."

Sergeant Richard Lopez
United States Capitol Police

THE POLICEMAN’S Final Inspection

THE POLICE OFFICER STOOD AND FACED Her GOD, WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS. SHE HOPED HEE SHOES WERE SHINING, JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HER BRASS. "STEP FORWARD NOW, POLICE OFFICER. HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU? HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER CHEEK? TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"

THE POLICE OFFICER SQUARED her shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain’t. Because those of us who carry badges can’t always be a Saint. I’ve had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I’ve been violent because the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny that wasn’t mine to keep, though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got to steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I’ve wept many unmanly tears. I know I don’t deserve a place among the people here, they never wanted me around except to calm their fear. If you’ve a place for me Lord, it needn’t be so grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don’t, I’ll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod. As the police officer waited quietly, for the judgement of her God. "Step forward now, officer, you’ve borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven’s streets, you’ve done your time in hell."

Family, friends, and fellow officers,
My heart goes out for all of you. I know this is such a terrible time for you all. Although the feelings of grief and loss will never go away, always know that you are thought of often by many and that you are not alone as your fellow survivors continue to grieve also. My boyfriend was at the scene when his cousin, Ptl. Michael Nickerson (EOW 2/13/01-Centreville Police Dept.-Centreville, MD) was shot to death as was his fellow officer, Dfc. Jason Schwenz. I will never forget the call I got that night as I am sure Mike and Jason's parents will never forget the calls they received that night, nor the call that Crystal Sheffield's family received. Mike had been employed with Centreville PD for only 3 weeks before he was killed. Hopefully, the MD Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors has contacted the family and fellow officers. They are a great organization. Also for future reference, check out the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund homepage, it lists the events for National Police Week, in Washington, DC. God Bless you all and stay safe!

as one of Crystal's fomer instructors I will always remeber the enthusiasm that she had for the job that she never lost and how it was easy to see that she was going to be "one of the good ones" when she hit the streets. She did not let us down. God has called another Angel home. Until we meet again patrolling the streets in heaven.
