Rest in peace, Sir! You are not forgotten.

Police Officer

July 22, 2006

To Detective Jaime Betancourt and his loved ones:

On this the fourth anniversary week of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.

My heart goes out to your family. You’re in our thoughts and our prayers.
Reading the loving reflections about your beloved Jaime gives us some understanding of what a kind and honorable young man he was.

Jaime, you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.

This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.

Rest in Peace, Officer Betencourt. I am humbled by your valor, courage, and dedication. I am so sorry your life was taken from you at such a young age when you had a lifetime ahead of you. How your loved ones must miss you.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Jaime gave to his community and the citizens of New York, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on March 31, 2002.

Jaime I cant beleive you are gone. I have been so selfishly rapped up in my life, I have forgotten others. I found out today when reading the ODMP. I never forgot my training from the NYCTPD and the NYPD. Every first day back to work I look at the ODMP to remind me to be safe and why I am doing still do this job. My heart was in pain, I never thought it would be you! But considering you died defending someone else is just like you .....you are a true hero!!!!! You and I were in the same police academy class , the same company...93-11. I remember you sleeping in class, I remember your laugh, I remember your skinny legs during P.T class but I give it to you, your butt could run. I remember you picking me up at home in the rented town car so that we could go to long island and go to the shooting range. You said the your bad english would be looked as a bad thing when in the dept. Yet you also said that it would never stop you from achieving your dreams. I remember when I left Transit D-12 and went to the 46pct, I needed back-up on a gun call there. You showed up!!! Damn you were so confident and you were a damn good cop, I knew that if stuff hit the fan it would be ok, cause you were there...you had my back. My prayers go to you and your family, you have served the City of New York with nothing but honor. Your death will never have been in Vain...cause the life of a hero never dies and your memory will live on through all who knew you!
