Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Melissa Jayne Schmidt

Hi Carole,
I recently created a Heroes board on my Pinterest account in honor of soldiers who have given their lives in service to their country. Today, a fallen officer's picture appeared on my stream and I immediately thought of Missy! I searched her name and the reflection page appeared. I was so happy to see her honored here and was awed by the people whose lives were touched by Missy and still remember her today. I ironically came across her memorial t-shirt today, as well. My dad bought one for me when he bought his. He proudly wears his often and I always smile when I see him in it. I, however choose to keep mine as a remembrance that I will always treasure! I remember the first day Missy walked into our classroom at St. Paul's. I was so excited that we shared the same last name! MANY people would ask me through the years if we were related, and while I couldn't claim blood relation, I always felt a kinship with Missy as we would often be seated next to one another, be locker buddies and stand in line next to one another. I remember being invited to one of Missy's birthday parties and was so happy she included me as one of her friends. I was also able to enjoy her high school basketball career from the front row, as I was team manager for each of her four years, and she always included me as one of "the team". She was a stellar athlete and provided so much enjoyment for her hometown every time she was on the court. It was fun to experience the excitement that she created during her basketball career! I visit her resting place a couple of times each year when I am "home" in Bloomer and think of her often. She had THE BEST smile and I am reminded of it's shine whenever I see the picture atop her reflection page. Please know that I will always remember her and miss her. Sending you love and hugs, and to your entire family as well.

Hi Carole,
I recently created a Heroes board on my Pinterest account, in honor of soldiers who have given their lives for their country. A fallen officer's picture appeared on my stream and I immediately thought of Missy. Ironically, I was straightening my closet today and came across her memorial t-shirt. My Dad bought one for me when he bought his. He wears his and I always smile when he has it on when I visit. I can't bring myself to wear mine as I will keep it and treasure it always. Anyway, I searched Missy's name and the reflection page came up! I was elated to see it as I miss Missy and am heartened to see how much and how many feel the same. It is also awesome to read the reflections and see how Missy touched others lives after leaving Bloomer. I can remember the first day Missy walked into our classroom at St. Paul's and I was so excited that we shared the same last name! MANY people always asked if we were related, and even though I couldn't claim blood relation, I always felt a kinship with her as we were seated next to one another, had lockers next to one another and lined up next to one another all of our years in school. I remember coming to a birthday party at your home and was so happy that Missy welcomed me into her group of friends! I also had a first row seat to cheering her on during her high school basketball career, as a team manager, and Missy always included me as a member of "the team". She was amazing to watch and deserved the recognition she received-she was an inspiring athlete!! Please know that I think of Missy often, and visit her resting place a couple times a year. Her smile was THE BEST, and when I see the picture that appears above, I can't help but smile, who couldn't, but with tears in my eyes as I and so many people miss her! Sending you love and hugs, and to your family.

Merry Christmas in heaven! Miss you more than words can say, especially on these special days that family is together. We always talk about you and how much we all miss you and feel that you're right there with us, laughing at our corny jokes and antics. You were always the life of a party! Love you...from here to eternity!

As a future Minneapolis CSO and police officer, and one that has family in law enforcement I have always been and will always be a huge supporter for everyone that has served or will serve to protect. I have read all of your mothers messages and it has brought me to tears to see such a loving mother have to come back every year to wish her daughter a happy birthday or to have to remember the date that she lost it all....it breaks my heart. God bless you and your family

I was a friend of Melissas when I worked in family shelter in her precinct. I was thinking today about all the challenges communities are facing and how Melissa was so wonderful with folks with her laid back style and loving sense of humor. I miss her and her kindness to all!!

I will never forget attending CIT training with you and your infectious smile. I stood at attention at your home going and walked the long dirt road in formation where you final resting place was witnessed by hundreds. The home going was beautiful. I was only a 2 year rookie at the time and I believe I survived because of your sacrifice. it could have happened to any one of us. I believe officers all around MN never allowed suspects out of our sight after that. You died to save many of us that probably would have done the same thing you did by allowing her to use the restroom. Thank you Missy you will never be forgotten especially among your sisters!

Mrs. Schmidt,

I worked with your daughter when I was with Hennipen County Security. She was a great cop and even a better person. She is fondly remembered.
