Reflections for Police Officer Melissa Jayne Schmidt

On the 05th anniversary of your tragic murder, I salute you, ma'am. I don't if time has made it any easier on your family and friends. However, I hope everyone will take comfort in knowing that you will NEVER be forgotten and will FOREVER be a hero!

Dearest Melissa,
I've been sitting here for quite awhile, not knowing quite what to say, rather how to say what I want in a few short paragraphs. It doesn't seem possible that you've been gone 5 years. You'll never really be gone...we feel your presence all the time and will forever be in our thoughts and our hearts. There is such a hole in our lives and hearts that will never heal and life as we know it will never be the same as it was when you were with us.
Tomorrow we'll be together with your friends and fellow officers. There will be lots of shared memories and more tears.
This Saturday one of your favorite nephews is getting married. It brings to mind the last wedding we attended for another "favorite" nephew where you were the life of the party, next to the bride and groom of course! You certainly "loved those guys"!!...and they loved you back...still do.
We'll all be thinking of you and wishing you were there with us. I'm sure you will be looking over our shoulders and shaking your head. Love you to eternity....

Melissa,
I can't believe its been 5 years since you've been gone. Your name comes up alot around the dept, that you were a nice person and a good friend. Its all true. We are doing a memorial golf tournament here for you---I wish you were here to play. We could use your long drives...and you paid more attention to the rules than we did:)
Your Mom, Dad and Chris will be at the golf course to give away the awards--they miss you so much, and so do we.
Keep us safe and know that you will never be forgotten.

Hi Honey,
Just dropping a note to let you know you're on my mind, as usual, but today even more since tomorrow is your birthday. The big 40. I wish a million times you were here with us to celebrate and we could pull the little pranks that go with that milestone in your life. You know what they are...you've done them before!
We will be going to Grand Rapids, MN tomorrow to show our support for your friend and co-worker Terri. She's receiving your award, the Melissa Schmidt Community Service Award. We're proud to be there for you and Terri.
How appropriate that she's receiving the honor on your birthday. I'm sure you'll be there with us.
Your cousin Stacy left this earth March 23rd to join her sister Becky, and you. Let them know I think of them often also.
Watch over us and guide us... Love you from here to eternity.

I want people to know that you have not been forgotten, even it is over four years since I last saw you.
I have set up a police memorial garden through internet cafe with vitural reality and it is named after you, " Melissa's Blue Angel Police Memorial Garden". And I do have your name, along some other officers on police memorial wall. Soon, I will be placing " notecard" that members can click upon and learn more about you beyond police memorial wall.

You are not forgotten.

i know i didnt know officer schmidt but i know all about fallen comrades, and the only thing i know is that we must always remenber the good times that we had with the person, and that no matter what at some point we will meet with them on the crossroads. they live trough us, the memories we shared with others and the fact that the person was KIA for such respectful caused, and thats the freedom, stability and safety of the public civilian personnel. Wanted to stop in and leave a relfection to let you and your loved ones know that I was thinking about you today. You will never be forgotten, especially by those that love you nor will the Blue Family ever let that happen. I salute you for your bravery. I retired from law enforcement after over 30 years of service and know how women officers would have to prove themselves to the macho male cops. You definately proved yourself as a hero. I know that does not change anything that has occurred, but your family can be proud of you and your service, not only to the citizents of Minneapolic, but also to this Country. You are a true hero and heroes never die. Continue to keep watch over your loved ones, wrap your wings around them, protect them and help them with their grief. You will never be forgotten.

I think of you not being here often. As I said long ago in one of my first reflections, it is as though I knew you in another time. I am moving along in my career and I wonder where you would be now with Minneapolis P.D. at this tme in life. We will never know, but we do.............Keep watching over us. You will never be forgotten.
P.S. I hope they return your original picture back one day.

Dearest Melissa,
Another Christmas has passed and a new year is just around the corner. Time and life goes on but its just not the same without you with us. The family was here at our house for the annual get together....you were with us I'm sure! We miss you so much...five years hasn't dulled the ache. That hole in our hearts will never go away. Just keep looking out for us and be the angel over our shoulder. Love you ...from here to eternity.

My thoughts are with your family on this Christmas Day as I know they are thinking of you today, just like every day, but even more today. I'm sure you will be the subject of conversation between the loved ones sharing memories of you. It is good to tell stories and share those special memories as it is a way of keeping your memory alive and to show others that you have not been forgotten nor will you ever be forgotten. Continue to keep watch over your loved ones and protect them. Merry Christmas Hero.

Melissa-

We started at the Mall together, two vets looking for new careers. Your Marine military bearing set new standards for the way the rest of the shift performed. Everyone else had to step it up more than a notch. You were the consumate professional. Although our career paths took us to different agencies, I will always remember you as a friend who someone could talk to and depend on.

Melissa,
I remember working with you and Tammy at the Salvation Arm/Harbor Lights when I was a security officer for Delta Protective Services. I remember how quiete you were until we became friends. I remember things you taught me, and long talks of becoming a law enforcment officer. I remember when you and I had to take a beligerant male down in the entry way of the facility. I remember joking and laughing with you and Tammy, and the rides you both would give me to my downtown apartment. I remember You, Tammy and I freezing our butts off waiting for the christmas collection buckets getting checked in at the back door. I remember the morning I got up and spilled my coffee on the floor, and fell down to my knees when your name and face was on all the local channels. I remember being the only one from Delta showing up to your funeral. I remember hugging Tammy, and Cpt. Chaplin and his wife. I remember all of the M.P.D. officers that worked that unit with us. I remember. You would be proud of me. I did get into law enforcment. I work the Nevada Department of Corrections, and lateral up to Highway Patrol, or North Las Vegas P.D. in 6 more months. I just thought that I would tell you that. I wish I could talk to you and tell you. So I could hear you say congrats, and that you knew I could do it. I can hear you voice now. Just keep watching over me, like you do. Like you did. I swear you are an angel on my shoulder. I keep a memorial of you in my car, and it never comes down, and of all the things that have happened...I have been safe. I miss you Missy! I will remember you always!!!!!!!

It's been awhile since I left a message for you, but you are always in my thoughts! Happy belated Marine Corps birthday!

I was in Rice Lake earlier this summer but did not get a chance to pay you a visit - Next time - I promise!!

I was just rembering the times we stayed up late in Havana and played pool and sipped on Baileys. The Cuba and Bahama days will never be forgotten! I treasure those memories! The beach at Veradero was certainly the best memories!!

To the family of Melissa: I had the honor of serving with Melissa in the Marines on Emabassy Duty in Havana and Nassau. Melissa was one of the BEST Marines I have served with. I hope to meet you one of these days!

God Bless you!

As I'm preparing for Thanksgiving next week I was thinking of a few past holidays, especially one in particular when you were with us, and what a good time we had. There will never be another one that memorable.
This last week Lynn, Kim and Patty came for a visit and we celebrated the Marine Corp Birthday a little early, in your honor. That was a special day for you and we'll always remember it.
We'll be thinking of you and missing you at the cabin this weekend when the gals are together.....you'll be with us in spirt..I know! You always made our get-togethers so much fun...always the life of the party.
We miss you more than words can say and love you to eternity.

Still remembered...

August 1, 2006

To the family and loved ones of Officer Melissa Jayne Schmidt and her fellow officers with the Minneapolis Police Department:

On this the fourth anniversary date of Melissa's tragic death, I wanted to honor and remember her today. Although I never had the privilege of meeting Melissa, I feel as if I know her through the loving reflections left by family members and friends. Her valor and courage will never be forgotten. I also salute her commitment to our country through her service as a U.S. Marine. Semper Fi, Melissa.

My son, Larry Lasater of the Pittsburg Police Dept., was her brother in green as well as in blue as he too transitioned from a career in the Corps to law enforcement. I am sure all our blue Marine guardian angels have heaven even more squared away.

I am so sorry that Melissa was robbed of her life at such a young age, but through her heroism and the profound sense of duty with which she lived her life, she made an immeasurable difference. May her spirit continue to soar and may her memory continue to inspire.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Melissa gave to her community and the citizens of Minnesota, and or the supreme sacrifice she and her family made on August 1, 2002.
