Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Patrolman Roberto Nieto

Robert, almost five years ago I remember hearing about the tragic accident and was again reminded, which I often am, of your great service in keeping the peace, as I passed that stretch of railroad track last Thursday. You are not forgotten and my thoughts and prayers go out to your family and freinds. May God's peace be all over you brother. Bart

Oh Robert, not a day goes by and I don't think about you. I think about all the good times we had together when we would conduct your FTO training. I taught you ways on the street , but I never told you, you taught me ways on the sreet of life. If I knew the last time you and I talked was going to be the last, I would've shook your hand and said, thank you Neto(how I used to call you), I am a better man for knowing you. Hey Neto, when your looking down on me and you see me crying, don't be sad, just think of all the good times we had that we shared together in our patrol car. I am a better man and a better officer for knowing Robert Nieto. Your friend Tomas Ramirez.

Brother, it is hard to wonder how we can continue doing what we do. It is hard to understand how we can make a difference when soo much is at stake. All we can do is wonder. Wonder and hope. And in the mean time, do our job with honor and integrity. We prey that what we do will make us, not only a better person, but the difference for somebody. I did not know you, but before joining the Service, I worked for a small law enforcement agency in South Texas. I know how hard it is to do the job that a small agency requires. Rest easy, Brother, for you will never be forgoten. We will carry the torch for you, and we will move forward in your name. To your family, my deepest sympathies and prayers.

Ptlm Nieto, your watch is over, rest in peace brother. May you stand next to God and watch over your family and those of us still on watch. God bless.

My husband and I attended the candlelight vigil of Officer Nieto Sunday afternoon. As I stood over his casket looking at his young lifeless body, I was taken back almost 2 years ago when I stood over the body of my son and wept my own tears of grief. Grief of a mom who had lost a child that she had given birth to 38 years ago. A child is never too old for a parent to grieve over. We searched out for his family. Their hearts are broken but his mom and dad both told us what we have felt about our son........"he died doing what he loved". Roberto was looking for the "bad guys". He is missed - he was loved. Rest in peace, young Officer. You'll never be forgotten.

My prayers go out to his wife, parents, and children. The Lord has called upon your Husband, your Father, your Son. He has died a hero, serving and dedicating to the end. I am sure Heaven has greeted your hero with open arms. I feel your pain and sorrow, but always remember Heaven is a wonderful place. May the comfort of the Lord help you in this difficult time, God Bless you all.

THE POLICEMAN’S LAST ROLE CALL

THE POLICEMAN STOOD AND FACED HIS GOD, WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS. HE HOPED HIS SHOES WERE SHINING, JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HIS BRASS. "STEP FORWARD NOW, POLICEMAN. HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU? HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER CHEEK? TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"

THE POLICEMAN SQUARED his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain’t. Because those of us who carry badges can’t always be a Saint. I’ve had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I’ve been violent because the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny that wasn’t mine to keep, though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got to steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I’ve wept many unmanly tears. I know I don’t deserve a place among the people here, they never wanted me around except to calm their fear. If you’ve a place for me Lord, it needn’t be so grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don’t, I’ll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod. As the policeman waited quietly, for the judgement of his God. "Step forward now, policeman, you’ve borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven’s streets, you’ve done your time in hell."
