Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer Jesse Kenneth Paderez

I thank you for your service and salute you for your sacrifice.

A grateful citizen.

September 23, 2004

I have been a police officer for over 30 years and an armorer for 21 years and I am certified as a Sig Armorer. My intent is not to blame but to train as that is my full time DPD job.

I have heard of one other instance where this has happened. After studying the other officers habits, it was learned that instead of using the decocking lever to lower the hammer, that particular officer had the habit of lowering the hammer with his thumb while pulling the trigger. In that instance, the officer unintentionally defeated the hammer rest spring, which allowed the hammer to rest on top of the firing pin. When his pistol fell to the ground, the concrete struck the hammer, driving it into the firing pin, which ultimately caused the firing pin to strike the primer causing the weapon to discharge.

As I stated, in NO way is this intended to insinuate that the officer listed here did anything wrong. I only know the circumstances that this brief summary stated. I do not know if this is the cause of this tragedy BUT I do know this habit will cause the firearm to discharge when the hammer is struck. Please be safe out there!!! Mark

Officer Paderez,
There are others left here who will watch over your family and help them through this. You have joined the most elite law enforcement force ever....those who lost their lives because of their decision to protect those around them.

To your family & friends,
Help each other through this...it's too much for one person to deal with alone. Let your memories bring a smile to you when you are feeling down. Don't be afraid to talk about him and share your stories with each other.....it helps sometimes...I know, I lost the man I had been married to for 8 years last year.
God bless you & keep you safe,
Denise

It's not how you died...it's how you lived. Thank you for your service. Rest in peace brother.

Salute.

As I go move into a Law Enforcement career, I realize the hazards more and more, but go I shall, as you did, accepting the hazards as a part of the life. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Rest easy, brother in arms.
