Reflections for Police Officer Donald Joseph Marquez

I look at your face everyday. Your wonderful sister gave me a button with your picture on it at the Run to Remember.I keep it in a special place right on top of my dresser.

When I went to the opening of the Gold Star park, I saw a picture, flowers and a candle lit for you. It was kind of a weird thing, because there were hundreds of people around looking at the names, but my eyes just immediately went to that. I showed my family that was with me your picture, told them how I met your wonderful sister, and we prayed for you right there.

Donald I never met you in person, I wish I had. Watch over your family and friends and brothers and sisters. I just wanted to tell you that you will never be forgotten.

To Officer Donald Marquez and his loved ones:

On this the fifth anniversary week of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.

My heart goes out to your family. You’re in our thoughts and our prayers.

Officer Marquez, you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.

This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.

Rest in Peace, Officer Marquez. I am humbled by your valor, courage, and dedication.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Officer Marquez gave to his community and the citizens of Illinois, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on March 19, 2002.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Today, March 19, 2005 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Police Officer Donald Joseph Marquez who died in the line of duty on this date three years ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Officer Marquez' sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Donald, I met your parents and two sisters the other day, what a wonderful family. We have been exchanging information about you and my son Michael and share in each others loss of two heroes. I wanted to say that you have not been forgotten and never will through the determination of your sister Donna. You are now on patrol with my son Michael, you being a veteran, please watch over him and tell him I love him and miss him. God keep you both close.

THE POLICEMAN'S LAST ROLL CALL ...

THE POLICEMAN STOOD AND FACED HIS GOD, WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS. HE
HOPED HIS SHOES WERE SHINING, JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HIS BRASS. "STEP FORWARD
NOW, POLICEMAN. HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU? HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER
CHEEK? TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"

THE POLICEMAN SQUARED his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a Saint. I've had to
work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I've been
violent because the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny that
wasn't mine to keep, though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just
got to steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though times I shook with
fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept many unmanly tears. I know I
don't deserve a place among the people here, they never wanted me around
except to calm their fear. If you've a place for me Lord, it needn't be so
grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don't, I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod. As
the policeman waited quietly, for the judgement of his God. "Step forward
now, policeman, you've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven's
streets, you've done your time in hell."

Just want to say he is well remembered... we worked on the same floor and he always had a kind word for my daughter and always asked how my family was. A most wonderful person in our eyes here at Beverly and Pause!!

Sincerely,
