"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

This is so sad. What an amazing love you two had.
Jesus will make it up to you in the end. He does ALL
things well, even though some things are too difficult
to understand now. May God continue to bless and heal you as you bask in the glow of sweet memories.

March 7th 2002 was indeed a sad day. That morning I woke to the news that a friend of mine and his partner in a neighboring department were killed in a fire. Both were IFFA firefighter and were the next two killed in NY after 911 and the WTC. Any way im sure PO Dees and TJ and Gino are some where looking over us. I will now remember PO Dees on this day from now on

Keith,

Today is Grace's 6th birthday. It's hard not to think about you and the day Grace came into this world! The years have passed, but the memories are still very much alive!!

Grace is a beautiful, beautiful little girl; with a heart as big as Texas, a smile that lights up the room and those eyes as blue as the heavens.....she sings, she laughs, she's as sharp as a tack and she loves her God!!! So much of you, wrapped up in that little girl.

Missing you so much.....
Deborah

Dear Keith,

Another year has come and gone, but your memories still stay, very much alive.

March is a month that just doesn't seem to go by fast enough!!

This was always your favorite time of the year..the Spring, when motorcycle riding was at it's best!!

Missing you,
Deborah

To Officer Keith Dees and his loved ones:

On this the fourth anniversary of Keith's tragic death, please know that his memory is honored and revered today.
In reading the many reflections left for Keith, it is obvious he was a man who was well-respected and well-loved.
I salute Keith's courage and valor and that of his wife and children as they have endured a lot.

May his loved ones continue to be supported by their law enforcement family, and other police survivors who share the painful journey with them.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Keith gave to his community and the citizens of Texas, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on March 7, 2002.

Policeman's 23rd Psalm

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want,
His comforting hand reduces fear to naught;
He makes me walk through streets of crime,
But He gives me courage and peace of mind.

He leads me by still waters in the path I trod,
And He says in Romans I'm a "minister of God,"
He leads me in righteousness as He restores my soul,
For His name's sake He keeps me whole.

When I walk through death's valley, right up to the door,
I will fear no evil, for He comforts me more;
For Thou art with me every step of the way,
As thy rod and thy staff protect me each day.

He prepares a table, especially for me,
As I work daily among life's enemies;
He gives me authority to uphold the law,
And He anoints my position in the midst of it all.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me,
Each day of my life through eternity;
As I long to hear Him say, "Well done...,"
When I lay down my life, my badge, and my gun.

Keith, You were a GREAT person! Everytime I was down in Houston you always knew how to make all of the kids laugh! Sloane and I often remember the time we spent the summer with you and Debbie and we all went to the rollercoaster park and you kept bugging Debbie about the new football stadium. Every time I see Grace even though it's not often you can tell she resembles you so much! Her eyes are exactly like yours. Well, we will all see you soon in Heaven!

Dear Keith,

Its another year, and school began today. Grace started Kindergarten and Trenton is in 6th grade - Jr. High - I can't believe it!!

The kids have had a wonderful summer and continue to go grow in their faith, in themselves and as a family!

Tomorrow is Bruce's birthday and Trenton is doing really well with it knowing the 1st anniversary of his death is soon. He has great dreams for his future, and continues to focus on the positive.

Grace woke up this morning early for Kindergarten and walked in the living room, looked outside and said "Oh, it's still dark, I'm going back to bed"...as she turned I grabbed her and said "Welcome to real school beautiful!!" She laughed, and off she went to get ready.

Thank you for watching over us and for gently calming our hearts when we reach out for you!!

We love you,

Deborah, Trenton and Grace
