" I think now looking back, that we are not fighting an enemy. Sometimes we are fighting ourselves and the enemy is within us. Make yourself no mistake; give all to your brothers in blue. Never let their badge go tarnished only because, Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. When we meet again brothers, then we will smile, if not then we know that this party was well formed"!

This is what I said when my partners was slain. I hurt every time a brother in blue leaves us for any reason. Please pray for their families and make sure the babies, and wives of our brothers survive.

With the deepest sorrow and the never forgotten honor,

Detective Matthew Heckman

My heart goes out the family of Trooper Nichols. I am a native of Geneva Alabama and I feel that I have lost more than a brother in blue. The death of Trooper Nichols leaves a void in the heart of all Police officers everywhere, however he now rides the highways of heaven and he is free at last. Rest in peace my brother!

Detective/Corporal
Rocky Mount Police Department

I remember Brian well, the first day I was hired in law enforcement I was really excited. I wasn’t paying attention to my speed because I was talking to my wife. Then in the rearview mirror I saw blue lights. Here comes this trooper walking to the window with this grin, and anyone that knows Brian knows the grin I am talking about. It is one of confidence and pride. He asked me how my day was, easing the tension of the moment. And then with his grin letting me know it was back to business, he asked me if I was in a hurry. Then asked if I had my driver’s license. I explained that I had just got hired in Millry and I was excited. He just kind of chuckled and told me if I was going to be enforcing the laws, then I needed to obey them. And told me to have a nice afternoon. I ran into him about 2 weeks later at a check-point we had and he said it was nice to see me in uniform and that he looked forward to working with me. I said the pleasure was all mine.

He had a rare sense of professionalism that is hard to find even in a police officer. He was duty bound from start to finish. It was even rumored he would give his mother a ticket if she was wrong, (to which he quickly disputed stating he could never do that… he would miss her cooking to much.) You were a great friend and a personal hero of mine Brian and I will miss you dearly.

The blue lights will always be on for you in my heart Brian and may god bless you and watch over your family we will miss you brother. Your family is in our prayers.

Chief Darren Johnson
Silas PD

I had the pleasure of working with Trooper Nichols when I worked as a 911 Dispatcher for Washington County AL, and my husband Darren worked with him when he was an officer for Millry AL, and also Silas Chief of Police. I have never met a greater human being, and a truly great officer.

Brian, you are sorely missed by all of us here. I know that God is taking care of you now, and watching over your family. Our prayers go out to Brian's Wife and Children....and to all that have been left behind.

God Bless!!

Amanda Johnson

A Fellow Trooper in North Alabama

Brian was my classmate in Trooper class 93-A. Although we never worked the same area I did have the few occasions where we worked special details together. There was no doubt that he was a christian. The memories I have are of him reading his bible at the academy. He will be sorely missed not only as a great Trooper but a great human being.

Corporal Terry L. Ware
Alabama Dept. of Public Safety

I was saddened to read of this officers death. I moved to Charlotte 7 years ago from a town close to where this officer was serving. Alabama Troopers were well respected in that area and valued for the tough job they performed-covering very large territories with minimal staffing. My sincere condolences to his family and children. I pray that God will comfort them in the tough days ahead.

Officer Mike Smathers

God Bless you and your family. Thank you for a job well done, but one that is never completed.
