Thinking of the Scanlon Family, hard to believe 10 years have passed. February can bring painful memories as I remember another young officer who I stopped and had to make him show me his ID because he was so young I didn't believe he was a policeman. He was indeed too young and left this world too soon. RIP to you Officer Richard Scalf and Officer Scanlon. I will never forget the exact minute I heard the awful news and have never forgotten to this day.

As silly as it sounds, I can't help but think of the simple things in life to stay positive in the face of such sad memories for the family and friends of those who have given all for us. Simple things like Dr. Seuss who reminded us that “Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple” and told us “Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.” It is in memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice that I commit myself to being a better policeman and most of all a better person. Rest in Peace.

We honor you, Officer Scanlon.
It's so hard to believe that it has been ten years and we know the sorrow that your loved ones feel. You are a hero and will never be forgotten. We pray for your loved ones to be comforted with the pride we all feel for the life you lived and the courage you displayed that day in 2002.

Mike,
I love and miss you very much. You will always be in my heart. It doesn't seem like you have been gone for ten years. I still can still see that proud look on your face when you became a police officer and when your children were born.
Happy 45th Birthday.
LOVE YOU,

Today I saw a photo from your funeral procession. Your bro's were driving you muscle car down a street lined with officers in uniform. I was sad. On the next page, there was a photo of you and Steve from so long ago, and then I remember that day. High school graduation. You both are missed. Thank you for the memories you left behind.

RIP

P.O. Scanlon, i was over at the Northwest Dist. Station (new 6th and 8th precicnts)today and i saw your old scout DARE/8-ball scout car in the parking lot... It just reminded me of your sacrifice. When you passed, i was a rookie with only about 3 weeks on the job with DPD. Your funeral was the first funeral that i had ever attended for a fallen officer and the images stay forever embedded in my head. I can remember seeing the pain on your wife's face and seeing her holding a very young, crying child that i assume was yours. Those images make me think of my own young children and motivate me to stay focused at work and to always concentrate on the ultimate goal of returning to my family each night. Thank you for your sacrifice, and your part in strengthening me as a officer by leading by example the concept of never giving up, even when faced with death. Rest In Peace, P.O. Scanlon.

Today you would have been 44. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you. You were a good friend and i'm glad I was able to call you that. Your memory is kept alive whenever friends get together and there is always a fond story we have to share with one another. You have left us with the happiness of a younger time and a sense of safety that you are up there watching over us. I hope you know how much you are loved and missed.

I've been thinking about you a lot lately. I pass the area in Redford where you murdered, almost every day. It's painful to remember but, it's always warm thoughts of you that get me through. You are missed.

Mike: I was retired (after 40 years), when you came on the job. So I did not get a chance to know you. I wish that I had. But be sure I will always consider you my brother. I wish that I could have been there to give you some assistance that terrible night, but I feel some satisfaction that my daughter was the prosecutor, who handled your case. You will not be forgotten. Rest in peace.

Mike-
Long before you were given your badge you looked out for us. It was your destiny and while your body was on this planet, you tried your best to look out for us. You are in a better, safer place now where you can watch over us ALL...all of the time. Peace be with you and your family. I always have fond memories when I think of the time we all spent together so many years ago!

Mike,
I've tried to leave a thought on this site every year since 2002 and just couldn't find the words to express what a class act you are and just how much your missed. I still can't find them. Me and some of the guys from our old FTC days still get together and your always in our thoughts.
