My prayers are with the family & friends of Officer Scanlon. No one can take away the pain & anger that you are feeling now. We can only hope that time will help ease the pain. Officer Scanlon, you have joined Trooper Calvin E. Taylor (NC Highway Patrol) E.O.W. 10-3-01 in a group like no other.....willing to risk your lives to protect other people. May God be with your family & help them find the strength to carry on.

The Badge

It is polished and shiny and looks so fine.
Once you earn it you have to tow the line.
The minute you wear it upon your chest
it becomes a symbol that you are the best.
It means honesty, integrity, and fairness to all.
Your life is never your own, but at the publics call.
Night or day, any hour, it makes you a mark.
It doesn't protect you from a shot in the dark.
Over the years the shine starts to fade,
but brighter still is the man its made.
It is often what seperates you from the crowd.
It is a second family of which you are proud.
So now comes your time, you can't be denied.
When you pin on your badge, wear it with pride
The minute you wear it upon your chest
it becomes a symbol that you are the best.

Sleep well brother, you will be missed.

I regularly read the Detroit Free Press on-line, and was saddened to read about the death of Officer Michael Scanlon. His actions and conduct were in the highest traditions of the police service. The short bio in the Free Press shows he was, in addition to a dedicated peace officer, a truly good man. That particular combination is tough to find. I hope his friends on The Force, and especially his family, find solace in that fact.

Rest in Peace, Officer Scanlon; you did well.

Captain Mark L. Heino
Carroll, Iowa Police Department

To our brother in blue. May you rest in peace. Your family, friends and co-works will be in my prayers.

Good Bless

I remember our first days of our academy class when Sgt Hodge passed on these words- "Take a look around this classroom. Some of you will retire from this department. Some of you will move on to other departments and continue your careers. Some of you will leave police work and move on to other careers. Some of you may end up in jail and others may die on this job." These words came rushing back to me when I heard the news. It's obvious that you never lost the motivation you had in the academy. May you rest in peace and May God bless your family.

I check ODMP at least twice a week when I come to work, each time hoping there is not a new name listed. Once again, I see a fellow officer has paid the ultimate price. May God bless Officer Scanlon and comfort his family and coworkers in their time of loss. May the rest of us never forget his sacrifice and that he died doing what he loved. Rest in peace, Mike. The police officer stood and faced his Maker,
which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, police officer
how shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To your Maker, have you been true?"

The police officer, with squared shoulders, said
"No sir, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've worked most Sundays
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
because the streets are tough.

But I never took a penny,
that wasn't mine to keep.
Though I worked a lot of overtime
when the bills just got too steep.

And I never passed by a cry for help
though at times I shook with fear,
and sometimes, please forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
amoung the people here.
They never wanted me around
except to calm thier fears.

But if you have a place for me here,
well....it need not be too grand.
I never expected or had too much
so if you don't....I'll understand."

There was silence all around the room
where the saints respectfully stood.
As the police officer waited quietly,
for the judgement....bad or good.

"step forward now, police officer,
you've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."
