Deputy Meyer was my grandfather. I am one five children from his daughter Josephine. My mother use to tell stories of when they were young. How much she loved her father and having to go court for the trial. My Aunt Loretta use to keep up with how long his murderer was in prison. He finally got out in the 70's as an old man. I wish I
Could have meet him. R.I.P. Officer Meyer.

I would like to reiterate what my brother has previously written, with a couple of additions. He was not only a husband and father; he was the patriarch of an entire family. A family that soon began to fall apart after his passing. His wife, Dorathea, would pass away within 5 years, and his minor children would have to leave their home to live with relatives. Though time has passed, the pain never diminished for his children, as evidenced by the pain you could see in his only son's eyes over 70 years later. My Great Uncle Bub was only 8 years old when his father was murdered, and he was still asking "what if" questions until the day he passed a few years ago. I will always remember you, even though I never met you. I will teach my children to remember you also. Rest in Peace.

It is my great honor to call Joseph Meyer my great-grandfather. He was a detective for the Galveston Police Dept. prior to working for the Galveston Sheriff's Dept. but after 82 years, his murder tends to overshadow his life. That isn't the way it should be though.

My thanks to all of you who have written in on this page. I was touched by each reflection. Let me share my own with all who come here.

Joseph was a son, a husband, and a father, among other things. That is the part that shouldn't be brushed aside by the maner of his passing. He wasn't a statistic, he was a man with a family.

His family still remembers him, as evidenced by two of his great-grandchildren writing in here.

It will be my duty to pass on his service revolver to the next generation in a couple of years. It will go to his great-great-grandson, an Eagle Scout, who will keep the memory of Joseph Meyer alive. He, and other family are Joe's real legacy.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the eighty-first anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect, not even 81 years.

Rest In Peace
