Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Robert Michael Tanner, Jr.

He was a good friend and will be missed very much. May God take care of you now and watch over your family. Rest in peace my friend.

Tony Hartman
former reserve deputy MCSO

Deputy Tanner,

God Bless you, and God be with your family. Your watch is now over, and I know you will be watching over the rest of us as we continue ours. You made the ultimate sacrifice for the citizens of your community, and you are truly a hero. I am proud and honored to be able to call you my brother.

Officer Brent Wagner
Henderson Police Dept.

As you know we also lost loved ones on that tragic day. Yesterday (01-14-02) we laid our fallen commrades Dana Tate and A.J. Coursen to rest. Know you all are in our hearts and prayers. Your condolences are more than appreciated. I know now the tragic events of 01-08-02 reach far more than across Beaufort County, South Carolina, or Zanesville, Ohio, but across our great nation. As you lay D/S Tanner to rest, know you do not walk alone nor does he ride alone. For the men and women of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office walk with you, and Cpl A.J. Coursen and LCpl Dana Tate carry him home. May they all rest in peace and God bless the men and women of your department, and their families, and the family and friends of Deputy Tanner.

Now stand tall my brethren for you are not alone.

Sgt T.J. Slupski
Beaufort County Sheriff's Office,SC

When the BOLO came across for the RP that Dep. Tanner called in my heart sank. Another officer... Another officer from Ohio... I think of the situation that he must have encountered and pray to God that the scumbag is caught. My heart goes out to his family. We all know this is a tough job, but even tough guys feel pain.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the Tanner family on this very sad day. My heart truly aches for the wife he left behind. May God please give her the strength that she so needs right now to get through what is this very trying time. I will pray that the angels of peace be with her now and always. May she find the comfort she needs from family, friends, and the brothers Deputy Tanner left behind. The hardest part of loosing someone you so much love is when it all stops. Everything is so crazy in the begining that it doesnt start to sink in until everything stops, and then reallity hits and then the true pain of your loss finds you. Please God be with this woman and give her the love-strength-courage & faith to get through this very trying time.

Thank you to all of our Officers who put their lives on the line everyday to protect each and everyone of us. May you all walk with your heads held high and with pride because not everyone has those special traits needed to do your job.

Thank you Deputy Tanner for a job well done.

My condolences to the wife and family of Deputy Robert Tanner. I am about to graduate the Columbus Police Academy in two weeks, and had given a speech to my class one day before this happened about how easily we can be killed even when we do everything right. I was shocked to hear it happened in my home town, on my parents street (Dunzweiler Dr.) merely ten houses down from where I lived before moving to Columbus. His death will not go in vain, as it has reminded me how no one can be trusted to keep their hands out of sight as I approach their vehicle. I will think of Robert Tanner's sacrifice every time I approach a vehicle.

The Badge

It is polished and shiny and looks so fine.
Once you earn it you have to tow the line.
The minute you wear it upon your chest
it becomes a symbol that you are the best.
It means honesty, integrity, and fairness to all.
Your life is never your own, but at the publics call.
Night or day, any hour, it makes you a mark.
It doesn't protect you from a shot in the dark.
Over the years the shine starts to fade,
but brighter still is the man its made.
It is often what seperates you from the crowd.
It is a second family of which you are proud.
So now comes your time, you can't be denied.
When you pin on your badge, wear it with pride
The minute you wear it upon your chest
it becomes a symbol that you are the best.
