Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Robert Michael Tanner, Jr.

It is special men like your loved one that make The United States of America truely great.

May the God of all comfort place his tent over you. Please remember to throw all your burdens upon the Lord and he will sustain you. PS.55-22

After Cain had slain Able, the Holy Father asked Cain where his brother was. Cain answered the question with another question. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” God is prominent in his silence,
but all throughout the bible, old and new testaments the answer to Cain’s question is a resounding YES!
A Police Officer is a very special person. A Police Officer Steps forward off the line and lets the world know that yes, I am my brothers keeper. In times of need, in times of danger, and in times of dread the police are there to serve and protect us.
To all fallen officers and their family’s:
Thank you so very much for your sacrifice.
Thank you for being my keeper.

A grateful citizen

To Deputy Tanner family and friends my heart and prayers goes out to you. May God Bless you and May your love one rest in peace.

Officer Tanner came to family day for Explorers Post 198, it was held at Dillon State Park in Zanesville Ohio. I was not a member of Explorers then but was there with my brothers who are a part of this awesome group. Tanner came there along with one of his water patrol partners and gave us a demonstration. We had a lunch before going out on the demonstration and we had a wonderful time. Tanner influenced me to join explorers and so I did after that day and I am glad I met Tanner because he influenced me that day! What a joy he was to the explorers group and we miss him. We will always remember our angel;)

To Deputy Tanner... my friend, former advisor, mentor, and now....our guardian angel...
To Deputy Tanner’s wife, parents, and family...
To all of my future brothers and sisters in law enforcement..
To all of my friends in uniform...

It’s been almost two months...
Yet my heart still bleeds as I type this reflection through tears..I pray God soothes and comforts every burdened and heavy heart...as we all continue to try to make sense of this terrible tragedy and the others that occurred that day..
I so wished that my schooling and the Academy had been behind me that night...I wished that I had been in a cruiser, helping to bring the murderer and accomplices to justice...
Better yet, I wished I had been in 17’s unit that evening, “riding along” as I had done before, in training, thinking, maybe, just maybe,I could have made enough of a difference in the situation confronting Deputy Tanner, that his life would not have been savagely taken from him. I wished he could have returned safely to HQ and his co-workers, and later, home to his dear wife of just a couple of years. But wishing sadly won’t change things...
I can do only a couple of things......one of which... is to continue my training, apply it with wisdom gaining knowledge and experience, along with what I learned from Deputy Tanner, my former Explorer Post Advisor, and
hopefully make him proud as I apply his instructions to “be the best I can be” as I, too, learn to serve and protect.....
and two....continue to pray that God will protect all law officers as they do their job with utmost dedication and I never, ever again, find myself sadly looking upon thousands who were tearfully, with me, yet proudly, being a part of a fallen brother or sister's funeral procession stretching some 5 miles in their honor!

You are so sadly missed Deputy Tanner...

To the family, friends and coworkers of D/S Tanner take comfort in knowing that you are not alone in your grief for I too lost two of my shift-mates, Cpl.AJ Coursen and Lcpl. Dana Tate, on that fateful day in January 2002.

I was surprised at how small a world we actually live in when I heard of D/S Tanner's death because Zanesville, OH is my fathers hometown. Oh, what a tangled web is weaved!

However, all three deaths were tragic and shocking and our struggles to deal with them weigh upon us every day that has past us since. My sorrow for your loss is as heavy as my own grief. I will keep you all within my prayers.

Another tragedy for the policing community, myself and Constable Chris ROBB (Chatham-Kent Police Service) attended your proud display of community and heroism. You will not be forgotten Deputy TANNER, not even from your brothers and sisters from your northern neighbour Canada. It was a very symbolic moment to be involved in the procession of your fallen officer, what a display of community spirit and sorrow. #17 god bless you and your family.
