I lost my father six months ago to Domestic Vioence. His name was Wilson Johnson. I know the pain that each of you are feeling. Words will never be enough to feel those silent moments that your officer would have filled. The empty place in your arms that belonged to him or those seconds of time that were meant for you his family and him. My prayer is that in God's merciful wisdom he will help you to have peace and that his arms will now embrace you and his presence fill those seconds. I can never express my sorrow at your lost. THANK YOU BROTHER FOR THE SACRIFICE. I WILL NOT FORGET WHAT YOU PAID TO PROTECT INNOCENT LIVES. REST EASY NOW YOUR SHIFT IS DONE.

Dana, Its been almost a month now since your death and I still grieve. You are missed by so many of us. The Hill just isn't the same without you guys, cause who's gonna make the coffee?

You taught me alot in the year and a half I've worked on shift with you. I hope to become as great a deputy as you were.

I will carry yours and AJ's memory with me always as I know you will forever watch over me. You both were my shift-mates, mentors, heroes and friends. You were two of my BOYS!

May You Rest In Peace.

December 7, 1941; November 22, 1963; September 11, 2001 are all dates that most of us have deep emotions about, will remember or have been taught about. For those of us who were family, friend, loved ones and touched by the lives of Lance Corporal Dana Lyle Tate and Corporal Dyke "A.J." Coursen, January 8, 2002 is yet another day that is imprinted on our lives forever. I lost not only my little brother, my best friend, but also a personal hero.

Dana and I shared a lot in common, we both loved motorcycles, NASCAR (he rooted for #24, I for #3) and muscle cars. He loved all of his children and stayed involved in their lives despite an active career in the Navy and later with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Department. He loved South Carolina and Beaufort in particular, his desire was to make a difference for young people, to aid them in getting their lives together.

Donnie, Dana and I, were raised with the same basic ideals that make this a country set apart from others. These are the sense of fair play, honesty and treating others like we want to be treated. Dana's Naval career was dedicated to serving this country and helping his fellow service members. These ideals did not die on that January evening, but rather live on in this family and with every person who takes an oath to serve and protect the people of this country. Dana & A.J. did not give up their lives in vain, they died hero's that defended what is good and decent in America.

In behalf of the Tate family I want to thank the citizens of Beaufort, the Beaufort Sheriff's Department, the Allen Funeral Home all for their support, love and prayers in this time of sorrow. You have shown me, though your actions why Dana thought so much of you. We the "Northern Tate's" as Dana called us, know that you will continue to look out for the "Southern Tate's," Marie, Rashauna and Lori, along with Corporal Coursen's widow and children.

With Love and Respect,

Steven A. Tate, Sr.

There I was. A young cop with less that two years in law enforcement assigned to be the field training officer to a guy ten years my senior, six plus years experience, and a twenty year military career under his belt. How would I do this? It was quite easy. You were by best trainee, and one of the best teachers. As I taught you Beaufort County coplife, you taught me how to live. Some of my wildest memories of the Sheriff's Office involve you. Imagine that. From trying to pull over a drunk with no siren, to you,me, and Brad getting run out of a house by a two-hundred pound rottweiller, to the black-man Nascar wave. Two days ago we rode together again to your final resting place. That was some sight. In my time of sorrow I felt not alone for I know you and A.J. were with every one of us. Your family is strong and it is they who helped us all. I said my farewells last nite in my own way...I hope it didn't sound too bad. Be proud my friend. Stand tall and watch over us as I know you guys always will.

To the family of Dana...know that never again will I feel alone as I patrol our streets. The best partners a guy could ever ask for shall guide me. Thank you for bringing Dana to us and for being so strong. Never before have I seen such courage in a family's time of mourning. You have all taught me things as Dana did. You also stand proud. As I think of cops past and present I have known, Dana is tops, and I am proud to have known him and the things we shared. We all love you and know that you are not alone.

My prayers go out to the family of Corporal Tate. He gave his life for what he believed in. I believe he was doing God's work. We in Muskingum County lost an officer the same day, please say a prayer for this officer's family as well.

Corporal Tate,

Your watch is over, and I know you are watching over the rest of us as we continue ours. You, and Corporal Coursen made the ultimate sacrifice protecting the citizens of your community, and both of you are truly heroes. I am proud and honored to be able to call both of you my brothers. God bless both of you and God be with your families.

Henderson Police Dept.

I heart goes out to Dana's wife and kids. I have never met him personally, but I know that he loved his job, kids, bikes and racing. He was an online buddy of mine and that is all he ever talked about. I always enjoyed the way he talked about his day at work and his outing with his family. He would be so excited. He always gave me a word of encourgement when I needed it. He will be missed. Shauna, Lori, Kenya, Dana Jr, and his wife my prayers go out to you. May God Bless you all!
