Reflections for Lieutenant Randy Gerald

God bless Lt. Randy Gerald for the example he set for everyone in life as well as after his tragic death. It is my personal prayer that the family of this fine officer will find peace in their lives. Godspeed, Brother.

Captain Scott Wright
Mount Holly Police Department, NC

I had the pleasure of knowing Lt Gerald since I was a little girl. We are cousins and I grew up with him as a close family friend and neighborhood idol. I think about you quite often "Tater". Your smiling face and your kind words live on in my mind. I don't understand why you had to leave us in this tragic way, but you left doing what you always did; "the right thing". Kelli, Ebony and Gwen and your entire family miss you dearly and I pray each day that their heavy hearts will be lightened just a little. My Aunt Kathy and I have been talking about you a lot this week and sharing good memories, because this is the week the trial started. Anyway, thanks cousin for being such a positive influence on my life and many others. I know you are in heaven still watching over us all. You will be forever in my heart....

Randy I want to thank you for the memories you have left with all of us. I will never forget the laughs we all shared with you. Your green sweat suit at the academy, the softness of your eyes....I miss you! I miss hearing you call me son and having to remind you I am female. I miss the guidence you have given me when I wasn't sure how to handle a situation. Your kindness will be remembered. If I can be half the supervisor or person you were I will be a success. I don't think you truely know how many lives you have touched. We are all trying to be strong without you, though some days it is hard. You were and still are the glue that sticks B Squad together..that will never change. All who know you though, knows if you had to do it over again, even knowing the outcome you would. Randy, thank you for being a wonderful supervisor and most importantly a great friend.

He had a hard time remembering my name, but he always greeted me with a smile, and he always made me feel more than welcome in his home. That was the type of man he was, a kind and gentle giant. If he played the smallest role in your life, he made you a better person. He touched so many lives that neither he nor anyone could begin to count. I leave these words of comfort for all who may read this, especially mom, baby sis, and my friend who truly has my heart.
"Now who is he that will harm you, if you are followers of that which is good? But even if you suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are you. And be not afraid of their terror, nor be troubled. For it is better, if the will of God be so, that you suffer for well doing than for evil doing. For Christ also once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the Spirit."

verses 13,14,17,18

LIEUTENANT GERALD,
I HAD ONLY A SHORT 6 MONTHS UNDER YOUR COMMAND, BUT IN THAT TIME I WITNESSED A SUPERVISOR THAT HAD A KNACK OF PULLING PEOPLE TOGETHER LIKE NO OTHER I'VE EVER WORKED WITH. YOUR ABILITY TO STAY CALM AND IN CONTROL IS A LESSON I HOPE I CAN OBTAIN AND NURTURE THROUGHOUT MY FUTURE CAREER IN LAW ENFORCEMENT. THE LAUGHS THAT WERE SHARED ON B SQUAD WILL LIVE ON FOR ETERNITY, AS DAILY SOMEONE WILL BRING SOMETHING UP THAT WE ALL CAN SHARE,REFLECT AND LAUGH ABOUT. THE INMATES WERE ALSO SO DEVASTATED BY YOUR LOSS AND THAT SHOULD SPEAK FOR ITSELF ABOUT YOUR FAIRNESS AND COMPASSION FOR OTHERS REGARDLESS OF WHO YOU ARE. I STILL FEEL YOUR PRESENCE IN THE HALLS AT WORK BUT SO MUCH MISS SEEING YOU THERE. REST IN PEACE KNOWING THAT YOU HAVE TOUCHED SO MANY IN SUCH A POSITIVE AND MEANINGFUL WAY.

Dear Beloved Lieuteant,
It's hard to believe that a week after our Christmas party I was called with the tragic news of your departure. I remember all the laughing that we did, all the dancing that we did, and the great memories that were made with all of us on B-squad. It's those memories and the memories of our long talks that guided me through the next morning as we all had to come into work and realize that you were not coming through the door with your big smile and your daily saying of "People let's go to work" as we walked out of briefing and you turned off the lights leaving us all in the dark; as you always laughed at us. The only way we made it through that day was through your guidance and remembering all the wonderful memories each of us have with you. Then we were all faced with the question of "How do we go on?" My response to our squad through your guidance was:
How do we go on? That seems to be the question of life today. You see, one of our loved ones was taken from us. Now were left with the memories and pain. The memories of a truly UNIQUE man. Randy is one of a kind. He was always there no matter when or what time. Always making sure everyone is happy around him. He always took care of us as a team, before he did himself. Randy now has eternal peace and all we have is the hurt and pain of losing him. I know in time the hurt and pain will lessen, but our memories never will. It's the memories that will help us get through this time of need and the realization that when a person dies, the spirit lives on in fond memories.
You are forever in our hearts and thoughts. We love you!

I did not know Lt. Gerald personally but I attend college with his daughters. He reflected through them. Never would there be a day that they did not talk about Lt. Gerald. I felt as if I did know him. By knowing his daugthers I knew that this was an exceptional father, husband and all around human being. It was heartbreaking to know that such a violent and senseless tragedy happened to such a nice family. I always hear about things like this happening to people I don't know, but when it hits close to home the feelings are too much for words. I know that nothing can bring this great person back but I know that everything this family does from now one will be for Lt. Gerald and his memory. God Bless....

To my Henny Penny,
You are with god now and greatly missed by all. However the jewels of knowledge that you left behind are continuosly picked up, dusted off and lovingly kept in our hearts, and minds. I remember Saturday 12/30/01 at 6:15am you told me that "whenever we see our fellow brothern in trouble we must stop to help. It is stated in the Holy Bible, the Holy Qua'ran, and all other religous books". That was our last meaningful conversation and it's one that I will remember and live by for the rest of my life. InshuAllah!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love,

We all feel your pain. Last weekend, I atteneded the funeral of one of my officers that was also killed trying to help others. The loss is still real. The pain is ever so deep. May GOD be with each and every family member and friend as you go through these difficult days. Thank you Lieutenant Gerald for your commitment to our profession.

God doesn't take anyone a second before He needs them, and it was Randy's time. It takes a great man to risk his life for others during his job, and it takes an even greater man to risk his life for others during both his job and his personal life. God Bless and may you rest in peace.

friend of Cpl. Joey Cushman, EOW 6-7-01

I was so horrified to hear of the tragic loss of LT. Gerald. Horry County just last year had another one of their officers killed and this must be had to deal with. LT. Gerald will be greatly missed as a law enforcement officer in S.C, but he is certainly in heaven with his brothers and sister who have made the supreme sacrifice. LT. Gerald we thank you for being a hero.

An officer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. You gave your life, protecting the innocent; you did this on your way home from work. May God watch over you. May God give strength to your family.

This is like a cutting sword into every police officers hearts. Only last Saturday I attended the funeral of Detective Don Miller in Wilmington, NC., another Officer who died trying to help someone else while he was off-duty. We have to ask, "When will this stop?" My sympathy goes out to LT Geralds family and the members of his Department. May God Bless them and keep them. I know these words are too few for someone who has given his life for others.

FOR THE SHORT TIME I KNEW LT. GERALD, HE WAS A SWELL AND FAIR SUPERVISOR. I MET HIM WHILE WORKING FOR A SECURITY COMPANY IN MYRTLE BEACH FOR THE RELIEF EFFORTS ALSO IN CONWAY, VIA THE HURRICANE. I ALSO HAD A CHANCE TO TALK TO HIM ONE ON ONE ABOUT HORRY COUNTY S.D. LT.GERALD AND LYDEN HAVE PAID THEIR ULTIMATE PRICE PROTECTING THE CITIZENS OF HORRY. TO THE HORRY S.D., THIS IS A SAD WAY TO END A NEW YEAR, BUT THEY ARE IN GOOD HANDS NOW. MY MOTHER WHO DIED BACK IN MAY WILL LOOK OUT FOR THEM, FOR THEY ARE THE ANGELS OF THE LORD JESUS. LT.GERALD, REST IN PEACE NOW. YOU HAVE GONE BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY. YOU CAN NOW PROTECT THE OTHER DEPUTIES OF HORRY, AS THEY CARRY ON YOUR NAME AND HONOR. GODSPEED.
