Reflections for Detective Donald Miller

Anothr year will be passing soon but your name will always live on my brother, your part of the overpass at Glenburnie Road with you so much loved to take those bike officers by during your training. We live on with the grace of god with us knowing that one day we also will be standing with you. You and your family will not be forgotten as all of you are always on our minds. peace brother 624 Forever

It will be 4 years on Christmas that you were called away. All because of someone who didn't care about others and acted out and left so many broken hearts and dreams behind. There are no magic words I can offer to your family to help them except to keep your memory alive and that you will never be forgotten. I have the outside of my house decorated with blue lights, one of those lights has been lit in your honor from Thanksgiving until after New Years as my way of thanking you for your service and not forgetting you. You are a true Hero.

To the family and friends of Detective Donald Miller, his fellow officers, and most especially to Officer Miller:

I read about the horrific events that culminated in your brutal murder, and was so saddened that you were robbed of your life at such a young age.
It has been almost four years since your tragic death, please know that your valor and dedication are not forgotten. Your memory is still revered and may you rest in peace.

From reading the reflections left about you, it is obvious you were loved by many and well-respected by your peers.
I know this has been a tremendous loss for everyone who cares about you.

Our family lost our beloved Larry Lasater when he was fatally shot during a foot pursuit of two bank robbers on 4/24/05. Larry and I were North Carolina natives, so I hope you and Larry are together talking about NC sports.

May your family continue to be supported by their law enforcement family, and other police survivors.
We grieve with them and for them.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Detective Miller gave to his community and the citizens of North Carolina, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on December 25, 2001.

Don,

We are quickly approaching Christmas again, and you are never far from our thoughts at this time of year. I am sure you are watching over us all, and getting us out of tricky situations, just like you always did. We still miss you, and for sure wish that you were still among us. We are lesser with your loss.

Hi Don:
I could not believe it when I heard you were killed. You are a great guy and would have been a terrific dad, if you had been given the chance. I will always remember you from our days in rookie school together--You were wide open. I still tell people the story about you eating those banana peels!

God Bless you brother. And God Bless your family.

Don, man it's hard to believe it's been this long. Everybody still misses you so much. Everytime I see Matt at the police dept. I get the pictures in my head of you and him walking around the PD together, wearing your super hero t-shirts and the trio, Jerry, Matt and Jerry. I still remember and feel the pain of the Bike Patrol School you put us through. To this day I have never had so much fun as you gave to me during that week. I know you know about the SRT team and I can't help to know that you would extreamly enjoy it, kicking in doors and taking the bad guys down and most of all the excercises "Rest is Rust" right. As you know I recently lost my father and my grand-father, Andy and Papa Bill, take care of them for me up there. As you know, not much has changed around PD, alot of new faces. Anyway my brother, save a spot for me, because I'll see you soon. Keep watching over us as you have been, expecially Tracy, the boys and Matt. Love Ya Man

4 years. Impossible to believe. Not a single day goes by that I don't think of you, as Bob thinks of you as often; even more, I'm sure. He idolizes you Donnie, as I have no doubt you know -- and as all of your friends know, you were someone to idolize. Bob's world was forever changed by meeting you, and then, again, that Christmas Eve morning. I will never forgot that early morning, or the days to follow. Such grieving for such a rock in this community, this department, these men's lives. I remember it being such a bittersweet competition that next Fall, for Bob and the others to try to live up to your leadership at the Carolina Police/Fire Athletic Competition, dedicated to your memory. They wanted nothing more than to make you proud and carry on your impressive physical athleticism. Ironic that I found this website tonight, the night when Bob once again dusted off his trainer, and started spinning again, once again striving to make you proud, striving to be like you, if only a little. You are missed more than you could possibly know by my husband, and all the others, there is no doubt. If anyone were to be in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers forever and ever, it surely would be you and your family -- Tracy, Gage, and Logan.

Don't grieve for me, for now I am free,
I am following the path God laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard him call,
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,
To laugh...to love...to work...to play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way,
For I found peace at the close of the day.

If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
These things I too miss

Be not burdened with time of sorrow,
For I wish for you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I savored much,
Good friends, good times, a loved ones touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all to brief,
Don’t lengthen it now with undo grieve.
So lift up your heart and share with me,
GOD wanted me now ...he has set me free.

I will never forget where Dan and I were when we heard the news about your death. We were almost into Canada-it made the news all the way up there. You have not been forgotten, everyday so many struggle to continue on what you (and us) believe in. Keep on watching the ones that continue to wear the badge. I see "in remembrance of" with your name on about all the patrol vehicles, and that means others see it too. So that means you will never be forgotten, and may we always remember the THIN BLUE LINE

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

I never did get the chance to meet Don. I was one of the Wilmington police officers that responded to the hospital that night for the shooting. It was hard for me to be there that night. Tragedies like this should never happen. I've heard many great stories and seen pictures from some of my fellow officers that worked with Don. My heart goes out to his family.

Don,
Even though I only knew you for a short period of time. I think of you often, and try to emulate my professional and physical life after yours. When I think I can't go on, and want to quit when the going gets tough. I think of you and remember your famous quote "REST IS RUST". That is the motto and motovation that I live by everyday. I can only pray that I can live up to the expectations that you did in your life.

I am deeply saddened by this tragic news. I've been in that situation before as I'm sure other officers have as well, trying to advise someone to stop dangerous driving or behavior while off duty and would never have imagined such an outcome. To Detective MILLER'S surviving child and wife I am truly sorrow for your loss. His reputation in the community and as a Police Officer have shown the true testament of his character. He is a true hero in every way. I am confident that the members of his community and the citizens of this country appreciate his sacrifice.
