Reflections for Special Agent Leonard Hatton

To the family and loved ones of Special Agent Leonard Hatton and his fellow officers with the F.B.I. and most especially to Leonard:

Mere words seem insignificant to honor your heroism and courage which will never be forgotten. On this the fifth anniversary month of the tragic devastation wreaked upon our nation, those brave men and women who lost their lives safeguarding others are remembered and revered.

May your spirit continue to soar and your memory continue to inspire. Your family had to endure losing a beloved hero and how I wish they had not had to endure this tragedy.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect and gratitude for the distinquished service Leonard gave to his community and country, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 11, 2001.

My name is Greg Morgan. I knew Mr. Lenny when he lived in the Alexandria, LA area. I played baseball with his son, Lenny, and he helped my dad coach our team. He was a great friend to our family and would always help someone when in need. It didn't surprise me to hear about how he lost his life. He lost it doing what he did best, helping others. On behalf of my family, I wish his family nothing but the best. You guys are in our prayers and you always will be.

I knew Lenny from childhood through and past high school- our families were close since his dad and mine were both fireman in Ridgefield Park.
Many happy memories remain, although I am sad to know he is no longer with us.
God Bless Lenny Hatton and the family he left behind.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Five years after the attacks on the World Trade Center, I was shocked to see your name on the list of victims. Lenny Hatton was my first watch commander when I was assigned to the Provost Marshals Office at Camp Pendleton, Ca in 1983. I remember him for his friendly, caring, non-confrontational style of leadership he exhibited while running "Late-B" watch. I often wondered what became of him in the years since we served together. My condolances go out to his friends and family. it is a tragedy that this happened to you sir. I'll never forget you. Semper Fidelis!

I will never forget the cries Leonard's daughter made outside of the church Leo's service was held. It was sad and made me weep. Watching first hand the bravery and the sacrifice this professional law enforcement official made for this country was observed in this young lady who simply missed her father.
Hug your children...be there for them, because horrible things happen in life, even when they shouldn't.
God Bless you Hatten Family and the FBI family.

There are but two persons who protect the sinful human race from destroying itself. One is God's Holy Spirit. The other is the Peace Officer. Without them, we would all perish at each other's hands.

You were called into this profession and our Lord and Savior has blessed you because:
According to Romans 13.1-5...
God ordains the Peace Officer’s profession.
The Peace Officer is sent by God.
The Peace Officer is vested with God's authority to enforce the law.
A Peace Officer's badge is to be honored by us, because God honors it.

You gave the ultimate sacrifice, your life for your fellow man, while serving, defending, and protecting others in your community.

Thank you for your service to America. Your efforts saved thousand that horrible day.
My thoughts and prayers go out to your family and friends. You will be in our hearts forever.
