I learned about Officer Moira Smith today at the Women Leaders in Law Enforcement Conference here in San Diego and was overwhelmed by her strength and courage during the events of 09/11. We are all touched by what she did that day to save so many lives and by what she ultimately gave to all of us. Our thoughts go out to her young daughter, Patricia, and her husband, Jim.

I visited the NYPD museum in April, my first visit to the city.
I studied the exhibits at the 911 memorial with solemnity. Those objects were actually there, we've all seen the events on T.V. but this was real & tangible. The screen can be a filter from the reality.
Upon seeing your duty belt on display my heart broke, it was part of you, the buckle still fastened.
It remains secure as it was on that fateful day, symbolising the courage & dedication you showed to so many.
You are an inspiration to us all.
God Bless You.

To those that loved and lost her. I remember. The bravest woman I have ever seen, a photo of her holding her headcover and her Sam Browne and running into a building others are fleeing. I travel once a year from Honolulu to my former home in N.Y. You see I have adopted her, I visit the memorial near ground zero and I leave flowers under her name. To see this tiny, tough as nails officer awed me. I'd watched my father do this as a child on several occasions, 6ft 3inch Irishman run into burning buildings and once arresting two armed robbers while we were on the way home from church. I asked him in later years why he did these things when he was off-duty. He looked at me , thought a minute and said "What can I tell ya, I'm a cop...NYPD...somebody's got to do it, ya can't just stand there"
So, every year I'll make my journey to that hallowed ground and pay my respects to Moira...and all thiose who didn't just stand there.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Moira, it was an honor and more than that, entertaining to work with you, for just a few months. It was out of love for your daughter and wanting to be home nights you went into community policing, you loved her so much. You were always silently tough while being compassionate to the most unfortunate people in society you ran across. You were the most intelligent and brave officer I ever worked with. I know god holds you at his side as he looks down and protects Jimmy, Patricia, and your family.

Moira, six years have passed and even though I never met you, you are still a part of my life. Everyday I look at the Mercy Band that I have worn since Christmas of 2001 that bears your name. You have made such an impact on my life.

"Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted"
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God" ~ Matthew 5

God bless every person who chooses to serve their God, their country, their friends, their family and strangers. As I sit here reading reflections (after finding this website simply by chance) I am more moved than I have ever been in my life.

Words cannot describe my complete gratitude to all of you who serve. God bless Moira's spirit and those she left behind. We will never forget what you did for us. We will not take our freedom, that you died for, for granted.

There are no words to express my sorrow, and not enough words to express my gratitiude. What a brave soul you are. It saddens me to know that your life was lost in such a senseless and thoughtless attack. I pray that your family knows what a true hero you will always be. There are times when I think back upon that day... it will never be forgotten, nor will the fact that you gave the ultimate sacrifice. May your family be blessed... and may you continue to protect and serve on the streets of heaven... there will be no terrorist attacks there.
Rest in peace my sister in law... rest in peace.

always.
