Reflections for Police Officer James Patrick Leahy

I can't believe its been 9 years. It feels like it was just yesterday when I was standing outside the NYU Security office talking to you with my little yorkie waiting for my dad to get off work. You kept making jokes how a certain person was gonna cook up my dog for dinner. You free spirit and smile is the last memory I haave of you. It was so hard to hear you were trapped that day and possibly never be seen again. Every year my dad and I sit and talk about that last night at NYU. You are now in a better place watching over your family and being your brother's guardian angel. You must be so proud of him. My prayers go out to your family who I know miss you dearly.

Tonight I explained to my daughter the meaning of sacrifice.
I took off the wall my NYPD Police Officer Shield, 8943. I wore that shield from 1981 through 1984,the same shield that was carried by PO James Leahy into the inferno on September 11,2001. He did so selflessly and with no regard for his personal safety. He made a decision to sacrifice for the good of society. And for that sacrifice he will always be remembered, by me and now my daughter who has learned what sacrifice means. And the shield that hangs on the wall will continue to have meaning, real meaning for the next generation.

I was brought in by C.O.P.S. as a peer counselor and had the great privilege of being the escort for James' wife and children at the first Police Memorial (May '01) following his tragic death 9/11. Over the days with them, I came to know and respect him through his family and think of him, and them, as I am now, each and every Sept. 11th as well as other times during the year.
I lost contact with his wife over the years, but do hope she is well and she and the kids are finding some peace. I carry with me the double pin (NYPD 6th / Badge 8943) that she gave me back then.
As a 35 year veteran of Law Enforcement, I grieve for each of the brave men and women we lost that day, and subsequent to it, due to the terrorist attack.
May they all rest in peace.

James,
Wow, I can't believe another anniversary is here. I feel like it was yesterday when you were getting Johnny Bop off the bus on the 1st day of school. And I was asking you if you wanted to come with me and the boys to the park. I miss you so much. I wish you were here. I would love to see your smile and hear you laughter. Not a day goes by without me thinking of you. Rest in Peace my hero, my brother. I love you.

Today marks the 7th anniversary of that horrific day. I could not leave a reflection for every public safety responder so I'm leaving one for my namesake with the intention that it's meant for all.

Those of you who responded to what at first was thought to be a tragic accident soon found out the truth, that maniacal filthy fanatics had made a direct attack on American soil. Just as the military personnel at Pearl Harbor had to deal with a sneak attack, so did all of you and you did it with dedication and heroism. You, Patrolman Leahy and all those who ran towards tragedy instead of away from it are what heroes are made of, yet not one of you would claim that title. You would no doubt say, "I was just doing my job." All of us in Law Enforcement, no matter where we work or what our responsibilities are, strive to emulate you and can only pray that when push comes to shove, we can shove with the best of them. The men and women of the NYPD and all the other agencies who lost someone that day, ARE the best of them, the best of us.

God Bless and may you all, especially you Jim (If I can be so bold) continue to Rest in Peace.

Jimmy:

Can't beleive it's been seven years. I bump into people from the 6th all the time. Supposedly not too many people left there anymore that I would even know. Your brother is there, you'd be proud of him. I rode my bike to DC for the Police Memorial in your honor from NYC last year. The braclet is in the 6th Pct. "museum". Some reason working out with you in the gym every day sticks out in my head the most. You'd think that would get me into the gym, but it doesn't.

Jimbo,
Seven years have passed. I sit looking at your prayer card on my desk, after the first moment of silence, with tears in my eyes. You will never be forgotten.
