Reflections for Captain Kathy Nancy Mazza

A great friend to everyone she came in contact with, my late wife’s best friend. A mentor to my son at a time he most needed one. She was always fun to be around. She was and a very brave, generous and compassionate person. It was my great privilege to have known her for many years. God bless her and her husband.

Dear Capt.Mazza,

As a seriously injured civilian I am writing to you today with a flood of emotions as our Country and City once again take a moment to pause, remember & relfect on this 9/11 Anniversary and its Heros. While every 9/11 Anniversary has always held special meaning to me & my family, I am honored and grateful to have found your reflection page.

While seeing your picture on this site did bring back some of the more powerful emotions of that day, I can now say for sure that you were in fact the "ponytail" PAPD Officer who assisted in carrying me back up to Fulton Street from a garage after the first WTC Tower-(South) had collapsed.

I sustained a very serious foot/ankle injury while running from the debris of 2WTC where I was employed. I vividly recall questioning you about my concerns that you would not be "strong enough" to join arms with another rescuer to assist in carrying me back up to the stairs-street level.

You quickly assured me "it would not be a problem, because tonight I was going home to my family."

Upon returning to the street level, you continued in assisting to carry me to a Chase Bank branch one block away. There I was laid down on the floor & other standing survivor's were "loudly" reminded by you to "not kick or step on the injured gentleman on the floor"

Before I realized it you were back out the door of the bank, along with the firefighter to once again assist others.

I am honored and blessed to call you my "personal hero" as a result of what you did for me, my wife, & my daughter who that day was just starting kindergarten. I salute you as someone who gave of herself so totally & so unselfishly to me as a survivor.

May God Bless you & keep you in his hands always & may he especially today continue to watch over your family, giving them his "special strength." It was unique physical strength that you exhibited in my rescue. I know I was very fortunate to cross paths with a unique/special hero twelve years ago today.

Every year I visit this site and give thanks to God for your bravery and concern for the people in the WTC. I've read police witness statements. They say, to a person, that you ran into the building with no hesitation and raced up the stairs to assist anyone you could. I still wear the dog tag with your name on it and am proud to tell your story to anyone who asks about it. May God continue to bless your husband and family

I was in NY on 13 of April and I visited 11 September Memorial:suddendly my look was catched from her name 'cause the name of my grandmother was Caterina Mazza.
I felt immediatly a link with her and in that moment I choosed to bring her photo and her memory forever with me.

I used to work in JFK at a fruit and nut stand called TheGrove. I remember meeting Kathy then, and she gave me a JFK pin to wear on my jacket. I didn't realize it until very recently that it was actually her that gave me the pin, the memory suddenly became very clear after reading about the upcoming 10 year anniversary this year.
Thank you Kathy, for giving me this pin, and I will remember your bravery and sacrifice always. God Bless all who perished that horrible day.

You made the ultimate sacrifice that dreadful September morning and saved so many. I remember seeing your husband walk into the precinct after the attack and thinking that you must be OK because Chris was at work. We later learned of your heroic actions. Most don't know that you are responsible for automatic electronic defibrillators being at every post authority facility. All your deeds have meant so much. Rest in peace Kathy.
