Reflections for Captain Kathy Nancy Mazza

Captain Mazza,

I came up your memorial page on this day, the 22nd anniversary of the day you died in the collapse of the World Trade Center towers in New York City. You, like so many other that day, displayed true heroism, in your efforts to rescue the occupants of the twin towers. God Bless you. Rest in peace. I will pray for your family, friends, loved ones and colleagues.

Greater love has no one than this, that a person will lay down their life for their friends. - John 15:13

On the anniversary of 9/11, I thank you and your comrades for your selfless duty and courage that momentous day. Your sacrifice and those of the victims and other first responders will forever be honored in the annals of brave men and women who gave their all for their city, state and for the United States of America. A hero in every sense of the word. It sounds as though you saved many lives.

Do you know how we think of people in our past that made an impression on us, so we look for them on Facebook? Well Kathy and I worked together when she was a surgical tech in LIJ. I was an RN. Kathy used to say that she was going to be a cop. I am so proud to learn of all her achievements and devastated to find out she is gone. She was so much fun to be with! She was a hard worker in the Operating room and helped me learn to scrub . She always had a smile on her face and I wish we stayed in touch. Rest In Peace my beautiful friend . I miss you and all the good times we had, Even though they weren’t many. I’m sure God has gained another angel

I have just finished listening to one of the Q1043 station’s 9/11 20th anniversary survivor stories, that of Tim Frolich. He had made it out of the south tower—80th floor, Fuji Bank—when it began to collapse while he was being triaged for his eyes. An unknown FDNY 10-10 firefighter pulled him into a parking garage stairwell and saved him; both fell down a flight of stairs and he was injured. Whom did that firefighter return with to help move Tim? You. He noted your ponytail and his initial doubt that you and the one firefighter could move his 6’2” injured self up those stairs. You proved him wrong! He knew that you had subsequently died after relocating him to a place of safety and medical, and that you were the rank that you rose to as well as being the sole, female Port Authority police officer killed on 9/11. Your power and determination he spoke of was touching to me: no one should underestimate any strong woman, especially one with a ponytail (I should know)! I’ll be remembering your name and story now that I’ve learned it: RIP.

Kathy and I were close friends for many a year. I am happy to read each reflection. I love her dearly. Kathy was first to provide levity as well as solemnity. She had a Goldilocks attribute. We were girlfriends and colleagues. We were both single and subsequently married. We enjoyed seafood, music (Babs) and a good movie. My Bob and I recently visited the living memorial for the PAPD in Farmingdale, Long Island. We were humbled to pay our respects to Kathy and the department. I grew up in the village of Farmingdale. The memorial park is in South Farmingdale. A beautiful serene park to which I had never before visited.
One single gift, the greatest gift with the greatest potential has made a permanent shift in our lives.
My husband, Bob and I want you to know that Jesus Christ came into the world, went to the cross and died for your sins. Ephesians 2: 8 & 9 says, "It is by grace you have been saved through faith. It is the gift of God, not of works, that no one should boast." The Roman soldier asked the Apostle Paul and company, "sirs, what must I do to be saved?" And they answered, "Believe on the Lord and you will be saved."
So, right where you sit, you can pray in the privacy of your own soul ~ Father, I am believing in Your Son and you will be saved."
Salvation, (eternal life with God) is a free gift. Jesus, the uniquely begotten Son of God the Father, made the ultimate sacrifice for every person. It cannot be earned nor deserved because it is a free gift from God to all who believe.
Kathy and I were lifelong friends because we respected one another. Not for our vocation. For who we are as individuals. Out from the soul, if you will. We each carved out our niche. A niche of marriage, of service and of love.
Thank you for giving us a hearing. Thank you to the memorial page for the serene opportunity to reflect upon my friend, Kathy Mazza.

Thank you for your parcel of time. Kathy N. Mazza was my girlfriend and colleague. We met as cardiothoracic nurses. We trusted one another completely. She drove a fast Mustang. We together had alot of fun. Kathy entered the police force about a year into our friendship. She married the love of her life. I was so happy to attend their wedding. The newlyweds moved to Farmingdale ~ my home town. Her life saving actions are who she is as a human being. She acted selflessly in our operating room suite as well. Her loyalty to our friendship was a saving grace to me. I miss my friend. I love Kathy Mazza.

Dear Ms. Mazza,
Before our school trip to New York, we were all given a bracelet bearing the name of someone who lost their life in the events of 9/11. The name on my bracelet is yours. I've read about your acts of heroism and the lives you saved that day, and I am so proud to bear your name on my wrist. I never knew you, but I wish I had. You will always stay in my thoughts.

Hi Kathy. It is me Jensiper. The name you gave me and the name I still use. It is recently the 16th anniversary of 9/11 and again I think of you as I do many times. You were my good friend at St Francis hospital before you became a policewoman. You taught me how to drive my first stick shift. I went to your wedding. You always made me and all of our friends in the OR at St Francis laugh. I have the utmost respect for you and it makes me horrified that you died in such a way. You were a hero at the end and that does not surprise me one bit. It was your nature to put others before yourself. You were a nurse first and always a nurse and then you were a police captain as well.

While I have never met you or any of your family/friends, please know that you have been in my thoughts today. In Montgomery, AL participating in a 9/11 stair climb, I picked your name off of the wall of pin-on badges. I just closed my eyes and reached out and picked one; and there you were. As I rang the bell and began my stair climb I could not help but think of your courage and ultimate sacrifice. During the climb when I didn't think I could make it, I would just reach and touch your badge (that I had pinned to my jersey) - - it would give me the strength to continue. It is now propped up next to the American flag that covered my dad's casket from some 40 years ago. I intend to keep your badge and pin it on my jersey next year (along with the new person I will choose from the board they provide at that time). You truly will not be forgotten in my household.

I was at ground zero the day Captain Mezza's body was recovered, February 10th 2002, but we didn't know it was her. My friend and I were deeply effected by this event and we walked over to the west side near Rockefeller park where we noticed a memorial for the Port Authority officers missing or killed on September 11th. We were both drawn to Kathy's photo and we noted that she was the only woman on the list.

It wasn't until the following day that we heard the body found was that of Captain Kathy N. Mezza. The experience haunts me to this day.

I just found this website recently and wanted to share my thoughts on Captain Mezza.

I thank Captain Mezza for her life and performing her duty.

Although I never met Kathy or her family, I did meet her Mother when I was a Child. I found out later that she was my Cousin. I found out through another Cousin that she was in Twin Towers. When I read up on Kathy and heroism, I was very proud of her. Especially after learning that she was in Law Enforcement like I was. God Bless Kathy and her family. Today I am so proud to say she was my relative.
