Officer Bates was my grandfather. Since he succumbed to injuries in 1942 and I was born in 1945, I never got to meet him. However, my Mother tells me what a wonderful father and friend he was. He is a hero, and I am very proud to be his grandaughter.

With love,

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 69th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Rest In Peace

When I graduated from high school in 1973 I went to work for the Dallas PD as a public service officer (non commissioned) assigned to the traffic division. I was eventually assigned to the intersection of Elm and Akard for 18 months....over 30 years after Officer Bates passed away. I never knew about his accident.
Here it is over 50 years later. I went to work for the neighboring Irving PD and retired after 27 years of service. With that being said, I'd like to say that I think it's a wonderful thing to have this website that honors fallen officers like Officer Bates. May God bless his family and the officers of the Dallas Police Department.

Rest in peace Brother Ernest, you are not forgotten.
