Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Steven Ziegler

Steve,

Man, it's been a year. Its hard to believe. I still miss you like crazy. I hope you know that everone still thinks about you and talks about your stories. Your legacy will live on forever. You are the best of the best. See you when I get there.

Steve came into our lives but for a fleeting moment and when he left, he left us with so many precious moments. He was my younger sons best friend, mentor, and definitely his hero. He persuaded my oldest son to become a police officer who now works for St. Francois County. You instilled your strength and character in both of them, Steve. They would have made you proud.

Gone too soon, our dear precious Chachi, you made us so proud.

Terry, Sandee, David and Kyle Rickard

Hey Chachi,
Well as you may already know I'm getting ready to start the academy at MAC in August. I'm finally doing it, I know it took long enough. By the way, I finally reached 125. I really miss you pal, there isn't a day that goes by that I or alot of others don't think about you or remember all of the stories about you. Like the time someone moved your patrol car at dispatch. You were and always will be a great influence in my life. I'll never forget you buddy, and hopefully, you'll be watching over me through my new career. Thanks for ALL of the memories and being there for me when I needed you. I miss and love you pal. Rest in peace my friend.

I KNEW STEVE JUST A SHORT TIME BUT HE WAS A DEAR FRIEND AND I WILL MISS HIM.

Not only can I say Steve was one of the best officers I know, He was one of my best and closest friends and a great father and husband.
At Steve's funeral a friend made a statement:
God has the most beautiful garden, and in that garden he has only the strongest and most beautiful flowers that ever exsisted. That is where Steve is because he is one of gods most cherished accomplishments. Steve is missed dearly by all who loved him, and we know he is still Here helping to watch over us and keep us safe until we can join him in that garden!

Deputy Robert A Steel
St. Francois County Sheriff's Dept.

Steve was a very sweet and caring man, he was well liked by all that knew him.
I went to school with Steve and he never had a mean word to say to me, if anything there was a smile for me and that always made my day.
I am sad to just now learn of his unexpected death, he will be missed a great deal by me and many others.
He is still patrolling for in heaven, but it is not the same.

Hey Steve!

I was just at Wade's house and we watched the video that I made for you. It really hits home how much of an awsome person that you are. A real family man! We still talk about you and have funny stories about you...by the way; I think you still owe me about $30.00!!!! Ha ha ha! Tomorrow I am having a party at my house for the Rams game. It should be fun. I hope that you will be watching. Even though you are in Heaven and are supposed to be non biased I know you still love the Rams and know that they are going to spank the Eagles!

Well...I need to go to bed.....love ya budddy!

Steve (Chachi) was a wonderful man. He was almost always in a good mood. He had a beautiful smile, great sense of humor, and just a generally wonderful personality. Chachi will be missed by his fellow officers, the Central 911 dispatch in St. Francois County, and his friends and family. For those of you who didn't know him, you missed out on a remarkable angel.
I think I speak on behalf of my family and the Sheriff's department when I say, Steve was and will always be loved.

Happy New Year Steve!

I saw Rachelle at the court house today. I didnt have much time to talk to her, though. Everything is going okay. I got David hired. His dad said that he is going to mount Erics big buck next year for him. Have a good New Year with Jesus!

Merry Christmas, Steve.

Laurie and I are getting ready to go and visit you this morning. Tonight we are going to my brothers house. Chopper bought a statue of your famous "ten point buck" that you never seemed to come home with! Anyways, love you buddy...may the sun always be to your back.

ChaChi,

You never knew this, but you are my hero and have been since I met you. You were the first police officer I ever rode with (even though you were late picking me up!). I miss you so bad, buddy. There isnt a day that goes by that I dont think about you or wonder what you are doing. Steve, if there was ever one cop I could be like, it would be you!

The greatest honor anyone could have given me was being in charge of your honor gaurd. The guys on it, Trautwein, Mell, Foot, Collins, Curtis, Coale, Ryan, ivy, and Harris worked their butts off to look great for you....You would have been proud of them!

I remember when you bought that watch that I liked so much and when you found out that I liked it, you gave it to me....I will treasure it forever. You are everyone's friend and I pray that you are watching out for us, because we will never get over the loss of you. I love you, pal.

God Bless you and your family, friends and co-workers! You will not be forgotten. You are a hero to the whole world. You are in are prayers.

I haven't looked at the ODMP in a week or so. Now i see about 5 or 6 more have died. My son was killed on duty just like Steve was. Left a wife and three Babies behind. I know the terrible time his Wife and family are going thru now. When one becomes a Policeman it can be a very Dangerous job. There is nothing else like it. He died doing his job mostly for other people. Steves Wife will probably be like me and think of him every single day. Im sure all her friends will help her get thru this. Kenny

For this I am greatful. No greater love than this that a man lay down his life for a friend. We sometimes find ourselves doing the unthinkable or the impossible. Really knowing in our hearts that we must either do it or risk losing the life of that person we are caring for. We do it for many reason, but the one reason that is the focus for our doing is this; It's our calling. My thoughts are with those who have given their lives for the cause. Be strong and diligent, stay focused and courageous.
