Reflections for Police Officer James B. Gilbert

Tiffany, thinking about you & your family. Even though we go on with life, it still hurts so much, doesn't it? Sorry I was a little late with my message this year.

James,
As the dreadful date of September 28 approaches tensions seem to run higher and there is a lot of anxiety. There is not a day that passes where you are not thought of; you had such a positive impact on anyone you came into contact with, but especially me, I am constantly looking for your guidance and support. Even though it’s been 13 years the pain is still there, I can assure you time does not heal all wounds, but it is comforting to know that you continue to watch over us. THANK YOU
“A PROMISE IS FOREVER”.

James you were the first recruit I trained that was murdered in the line of duty. I stood in the crime scene that morning with my heart filled with rage and sadness. I thought about your wife and child and how young you were. You were there to help the man that shot you, but he was there kill. He tried to kill your partner but thank God your partner took him out instead. You will never be forgotten by your brothers and sisters in NPD. When I see you again I will be the recruit and you can yell at me and PT me in heaven. May God bless and watch over your loved one's.

To the family and friends of Officer James Gilbert, I offer you my deepest regrets. I was the Forensic Crime Scene Investigator that worked James' case at the scene and though it has been a number of years, I can still remember each detail and how empty I felt inside, it has never left me. Know this, James heroically gave his life in the performance of his duty, ever striving to help others and as long as his memory is not forgotten, he will always be with us.

James,

Not a day goes by that I don't think of your first day in the academy. You were all grins and coolness until Ray starting barking orders and you nearly fell out of your chair. I also remember our last conversation just hours before you were killed. I miss you. Even though it has been 10 years you are still in my heart, and you will always be there.

Tiffany,
Tomorrow will make 10 years....thankfully the Lord has helped us go on in our lives. It's strange, it somehow seems like so long ago and at the same time it seems like just a short time. Thanks again for the kindess you showed me in 2002. You and your family will be in my thoughts tomorrow as you are each year. Give me a call sometime....I don't have a current number for you.

During my 31 years with Norfolk, the day James died had to be my worst. He was a very bright, effective and well liked young officer amoung his piers and supervisors alike. He had dedicated himself to learning as much as he could and was prepairing to move up in position and rank with his eye on a big future. Norfolk Citizens lost a great asset and those of us who knew him lost a great friend that day.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been here, but not because I haven’t thought about you. There has just been entirely too much to deal with. Everyone has kind of lost touch with each other over the past years, I’m sure it can be attributed to the head and not the heart, we all have something in common, with your tragic passing, we are always connected, no matter how far apart we may be. That fateful day 9 years ago, we walked into a room full of strangers, and when the week was over, we had lifetime friends.
When I lost Dad in January, I couldn’t bear the thought that he was gone from my life, but I did have some peace knowing that you were there waiting for him, and the 2 of you would continue the argument of the definition of “moving the car.”
Today we reach the 9 year mark, it seems as if it was yesterday, and I often find myself saying, “If James were here, he would…” I think of you often, and miss you forever!
