Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Jason Matthew Baker

I didn't have the honor to know Deputy Jason Baker, but I know and deeply respect his father, former Albion, Michigan Department of Public Safety Director, Jerry Baker. Jerry Baker was a cop's chief and I am certain that Jason was
every inch an outstanding cop — just like his Dad. Our condolences from the heart.

Immortality
Do not stand by my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am a diamond glint on snow
I am the sunlight on unripened grain
I am the gentle Autumn rain

When you awake in the morning, hush
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there
I did not die

Again, through a terrible act of violence we have lost one of our finest. My first husband, Oakland City, IN, patrolman, Michael E. Deno, was shot on 2-28-00, he died the following day. He too, was a member of ILEA class 99-139. He and Jason were classmates. It truly saddened me to hear that another brother had died doing something that he so loved to do. I want to offer my sympathy to the family and especially to Wesley. The days will be long and the journey is rough, but you will make it. Jason's smile, and the memories you have of him will carry you through and his legacy will be a lasting impression on those that have agreed to protect the thin blue line just as he did. Be strong and take it one day at a time, and lean on those that want to reach out to you. You do not have to go through this difficult time alone. Myself and the other survivors will be here for you when you need us.

Someone killed a policeman today,
and a part of our country died.
A piece of our country, he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.
The beat he patrolled was a battlefield too,
just as if he had gone to war.
Though the flag of our country won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, someone killed a policeman today,
maybe in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his spirit patrols his beat on a dark country street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side,
He answered the call, of himself he gave all,
and part of our country died

As a student at the U of I, I completed an internship at the Marion Co. Sherrif's Dept in 1991. During that time I developed close friendships with many of the MCSD deputies that trained me. My heart goes out to the family of Jason Baker and to all of the brothers and sisters at MCSD who have been left saddened by this tragedy. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Jason, I know that he is a hero.

His legacy will live on the hearts of every law enforcement officer that fights the struggle to supress crime and protect human life.

My deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Deputy Baker. I can only imagine your pain and anguish of losing someone who was fighting the good fight for all of us. The thin blue line between law enforcement and chaos is a little thinner with his passing. Know that he now walks a beat on heaven's streets. Though I did not know Deputy Baker, I am sure I know some of the reasons he put on the uniform and went to work every day. Godspeed, Jason.
