Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Matt Herzog

It was my honor and privilege to have worked with Deputy Herzog on numerous occasions. Though we are all diminished by his absence from among us, we are all the better for having known him.

Words fail me on this, the anniversary of his passing.

Deputy Herzog, I never met you or knew you but I remember when I first heard the news of your passing. I had friends who knew you from Pullman and they told me all about you.

And then I moved over to the WCSO the next year. Some of your friends are now mine and I enjoy hearing stories. You were a beacon of light, a banner carrier for the new generation of deputies. The light still shines brightly in memories. Eleven years seems like a long time but it is not.

You will never be forgotten and we will always think of you. God Bless.

Hi Matt,
Prepare Heaven as another sister joins you now. Welcome Margaret Anderson with open arms. My wounds of your loss are fresh again as another senseless tragedy courses the news. I pray for her family and ours as we try to make sense of this wicked deed. Watch over us as I know you do- you are an angel! We miss you still...always!

I worked the night Deputy Herzog came in to the Emergency Room. A horrible week I will never forget. Pray for the family and please let Matt's great spirit live on in his fellow deputies and caregivers that care for fallen law enforcement.

When someone loses their life for the purpose of making someone else's life better or safer or higher quality of living...the loss is only felt here on earth. I think God sees this man as a keeper of the peace and a peacekeeper. May he be honored in all places. May his wife feel the respect she deserves for being the wife of such a person willing to sacrifice it all for the sake of innocent citizens who may have been at harms way by this criminal he was chasing. He was and is a Hero.

Not sure what made me come onto this site today....maybe the nearness of Christmas. I have been thinking of your family and loved ones. Even though its been 9 years they must still feel the loss of you as strong as ever. Even though you were in a short part of my life, you made an impact on me. Your smile, laugh, and love of life made each person who met you feel lucky. I know I feel blessed to have known you and think of your family every year in September. God bless you Matt.

Matt, I can't believe it has been nine years! It is amazing how fast it all goes by... Your neices and nephews grown strong and big with each passing day. I wish more than anything you could have known them. You are the angel that watches over them instead. For this I am ever greatful. Despite the lenght of time you are still present in my heart and I feel your presence in my life. I will never stop loving or missing you my dearest brother. In your memory I took cakes to the Kennewick and Richland police departments today. I know how much you would have loved to find cake in your breakroom! So farewell to another year... Gone but never forgotten.

You are on my heart buddy this 9th year since you were suddenly gone from our lives into eternity. I am filled with sadness my friend and my brother.

I was just remembering chatting with you for the last time on the morning of 9/11/2001 at shift change for day shift, watching the towers come down in New York. Little did I know that in less than 48 hours, I would get a call from John in the middle of the night telling me to get to the hospital because something had happened to you. Not knowing if you had been shot or what, it was a long and chilling code run to the hospital, full of anxiety and panic. I just remember walking into ER, locking eyes with Steve and seeing the grief on his face, seeing you being worked on by the hospital staff, and seeing your x-ray on the wall with your cross necklace glowing. It is a scene and an image that will be burned into my memory for my lifetime. I remember saying goodbye to you in the hospital room, and after whispering in your ear, seeing your heart rate increase. I remember promising your wonderful father that I would leave law enforcement for my family's sake, which I committed to while walking out of your hospital room from that final goodbye.

Thank you Matt for being such a good friend to me, for being there for me at the academy, for being there for the birth of my girls, for hilarious times on patrol, and most importantly, for letting me speak to you about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ before your passing. I love you buddy and miss you terribly. Praise the Lord for blessing me with your friendship!

Hi Matt!
It seems like a law enforcement career is getting more deadly. Just recently we have lost 1 officer in Seattle who was fired upon while sitting in his patrol car, then 4
officers were shot and killed while sitting in a Lakewood
coffee shop and now 2 more were shot in Eatonville while
responding to a DV call. One was released from Madigan on
Christmas Eve and the first stop he made was to see his
fellow officer at Harborview who is on life support and in
a coma. It amazes me that people are willing to choose such a necessary, but dangerous profession. My hat is off
to you and all the other officers who put others above themselves. Your sacrifice can never be repaid and we are
in your debt forever.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 8th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

As September 11th approached again this year, I found myself once again replaying the events of the fateful night. It is still as clear in my mind as it was that night. And even though people walk past your bench at the courthouse without paying much attention anymore, thoughts of you and what you meant to this department still weigh heavy on the minds of many of us.

They say that positve things can come from trajedy. Your story has been a catalyst for changes in pursuit policy and driver training across Washington State. In the last 10 years the number of officer fatalities from crashes in Washington has dropped to nearly half of the national average. Thank you for continuing to watch over the dedicated men and women of law enforcement.

As they say, you are gone but not forgotten. God Bless You!

Matt,

It's been eight years since you paid the ultimate price. Your memorial service is one that I will never forget. I'd never seen so many tough guys cry. I met you a couple times and like many others when I think of you I remeber your smile and how contagious it was. The other day I was trying to remember if there was one exact moment when I decided that law enforcement was my calling. I had thought about it before your passing and hearing all the great stories about you and your can do attituted and just your love for the job cemented that for me. I wanted to let you know that you are a true insperation to me. I just recently graduated from the reserve academy and many of the traing techniques have been improved due to your sacrifice. You are not forgotten and never will be. WCSO lost an amazing deputy. I'm just fortunate to have met you. I pray that I can even be half the deputy you were. Thank you for your service my brother in blue! You are missed greatly by all.
