Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Matt Herzog

When we think of Matt, the first thing that comes to mind is his beaming smile, a smile that could melt your heart! Our families did many things together, watching our children grow up, creating lasting memories, that will never be lost. Matt was always so happy and caring, and we know, so very dear to his family and friends. There is absolutley no way we can express the sorrow and sense of loss we feel for all of Matt's family, friends and coworkers.
All our love, Ed, Penny, Ryan & Aaron Swan

With all the trauma our nation is feelng after the attack on the World Trade Center it is unfortunate that Matt's death may have not gotten the attention it deserved. So thanks for ODMP to keep us updated on other's lives. But I also hope that our prayers are with the trainee who must feel overwhelming pain about this incident. We all remember our stressful FTO days. I am sure he is carrying a very heavy burden on his heart.

May God Speed your journey and comfort those you have left behind. God Bless your family and your department as they come to grips with your early departure. You join many fine brothers and sisters guarding the rest of us from above. Thank you for your untiring service here, now go and rest for a while. I am sure that God has many noble tasks for you to complete.

My heart goes out to the Herzog family. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I played drums with Matt in marching band, both in High School at Olympic and in College at WSU. He was a great friend, and although I haven't spoken to Matt is several years, I have thought of him often. He will be missed. I have wonderful memories of Matt that will remain in my heart forever.

With deepest sympathy,

Scott Coleman

I am so sorry to hear of another unnecessary death. I know the pain and torture that friends and family endure when something like this happens to a life that touched so many others and had so much remaining potential. I cannot express my condolences enough and we pray for all of Matt's friends and relatives.

I had the opportunity to work with Matt for 2 years during my time with the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office. Matt always had a positive attitude about police work. He loved his job and the people he worked with. Matt, we miss you and love you. We will never forget you brother!

Love, Eric

To the family and friends of Officer Herzog
Our family would like you to know that you are in our prayers. We have been where you are and know some of the pain you feel. Our hearts break with you and we want to share our new found strenghts with you too. This is not a place you wish to be but you are there because your loved one was an exceptional person and so is his family. Except the love and support of others and know that you will make it through this and will come out stronger than you ever dreamed.

I met Mark when he came from the Police Academy patroling the "up river" area for the Skagit County Sheriff's Department. It is true he always had a smile on his face and a kind word for everyone he met. He treated people the way he would like to be treated. God Bless You Mark, your loved one's and fellow officers.

~"WHAT IS A POLICEMAN?"~

~He's the guy next door - a man's man with the memory of a little boy. He has never gotten over the excitement of police cars and sirens and danger.~

~He's a guy like you and me with warts and worries and unfulfilled dreams. Yet he stands taller than most of us.
He's a policeman.~

~He puts it all on the line when dispatch calls.
A policeman is at once the most fortunate and the least fortunate of men.~

~He's a man who saves lives because he has seen too much death. He's a gentle man because he has seen the awesome power of violence out of control.~

~He's responsive to a child's laughter because his arms have held too many small bodies that will never laugh again.

~He's a man who appreciates the simple pleasures of life - hot coffee held in numb, unbending fingers - a warm bed for bone and muscle compelled beyond feeling - the camaraderie of brave men -the divine peace and selfless service of a job well done in the name of all men.~

~He doesn't wear buttons or wave flags or shout obscenities.
When he marches, it is to honor a fallen comrade.
He doesn't preach the brotherhood of man.
He lives it.~

Matt-

Although it has been years since we last had the chance to visit, we spent many hours growing up together. The memories are too numerous to list but I will never forget the times we spent as taking family trips, playing games, or just sitting and talking. You were a great friend. God bless you Matt. Our prays are with you and your family.

It was such a great pleasure to have worked with Matt. I will always remember his smile and his "get it done" attitude. Now I will be able to say that I will never forget his Dad. To look into Dad's eyes is to see Matt.
Mr. Herzog you and your wife raised a wonderful young man, you can be proud, he truly was one of Whatcom County's best. Rest in peace, Matt, and thank you for all the ways you helped our community.

Matt was an amazing person and deputy. He touched every person he came in contact with. His sense of humor, his light, his laughter will be always remembered and greatly missed. He truly loved his job, and our department has lost not only a co-worker, but a friend and brother. The void his death leaves will never be filled.

I pray that the family of this officer will be comforted. We are going through alot right now and with a family member dead it must be devastating, depressing, the family and friends must have billions of things on their minds. I pray that they be comforted by the loving arms
of our Savior Christ Jesus

I am at a loss of words. I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Deputy Herzog for the last 4 years. He and I were provisional officers for the same dept, years ago, though not at the same time. He always had a smile on his face, he really loved what he did. He wore his uniform and badge with extreme pride and integrity. Matt, I will miss you buddy. Watch over the rest of your LE brothers from up there. Rest in peace brother, they caught the guy. All my love to you and your family.
