Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Matt Herzog

My dearest brother you are missed beyond words and measure. I watch my children grow into adults wishing and remembering all the memories we would have shared together. I know God needed the best when he took you home. I feel your presence in my life daily and know you are in heaven fighting once again for humankind. You were always destined for greatness! Today and everyday I aspire to honor your memory. Happy heavenly birthday Matt!

I was on duty in 2001 working for the Benton County Sheriff’s Office when our dispatcher announced an officer down in Whatcom County. A stark reminder of the dangers of our job. I will never forget the tones that preceded the announcement. We will never forget your sacrifice! May you rest in peace.

Six county boys and 10 plus BPD Ofc took time to remember you at the site last night. WhatComm checked your status and the mic clicks rang out. Many of us have been trained by those who were trained by you. Your legacy has not been forgotten.

Rest easy brother.

Dear Matt, it’s been 20 years and our collective hearts still ache. We feel your gentle touch , but the pain of what might have been lingers on. You are sadly missed and never forgotten.

Do you remember when you were brand new and took your patrol car to your mom and dad’s before starting at CJTC? You rear ended that car on the ferry. You called into dispatch to let your Sgt. know. You asked me if I thought you’d get fired. I was laughing so hard I almost couldn’t answer . I knew they’d never fire you. You are missed by so many Matt.

What-Comm checked your status tonight, Matt, and then aired a short eulogy. Lots of mic clicks for you, too. You may be gone from us, but we’ve not forgotten.

Rest In Peace.

While Matt and I only worked with one another for a short time at WCSO I remember him fondly. Today for some unknown reason he came to my mind and it brought a smile to my face. You are missed. Go Cougs!

I still remember you often. An unforgettably positive, friendly, funny, and energetic presence at WSU, the Pullman reserve academy, and the police academy. You are missed.

Dear Matt:
Today in a moment of quiet reflection I returned to this site and read the newer postings and re-read the older ones. Dear son, you are remembered by many who still love you with passion and care.

As I grow older, I smile because I am
nearer to you. I miss you every day!

Much love.
Dad

Matt,
I was at your wedding and worked with your dad. Even today I remember you. Your death came at a terrible time and affected many. You will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

His initiative and sense of humor were a benchmark when I started in law enforcement. I have tried to emulate his style but there is only one Matt Herzog.

Time has not diminished the sense of loss felt by family and friends, but most have learned how to go on with holes in their hearts. Never a day goes by that you are not remembered in some way. some sad, but more and more they are being replaced with the fond memories of time shared with family and friends, all of who miss and love you dearly. We know you are still among us, To Serve and Protect!

I met Matt while at WSU. What a great dude. I still think about him from time to time. I remember Matt was a drummer for a local college band. I also had him in a few classes. He was so positive and great to be around. Thank you for your service.

Greetings all citizens, please lend an ear
and remember a fine young man
that many hold dear.
A fine son, sweet brother,
his equal no other.
He became a great man and a fine loving husband.
A lawman by trade,
to serve and protect,
you treated us all with utmost respect.
We`d know it was you when your radio would call,
we`d hear the spinning of your disco ball.
His father, his mother, his sister, and many do wonder
why God has taken our beloved brother.
So pure was his spirit, his love for us real,
God made him an Angel and gave him his wings.
That must be the reason that so fine a young man
would be called home to Heaven, it must be God`s plan'
For all other reason`s make no sense at all.
I know Matthew`s with Jesus, awaiting our 911 call,
and he`ll come to guide us to the place we go home,
our questions finally answered from God`s Holy Throne!
Until then we`ll go on, one foot front of the other,
filling our time with family and friends,
until it`s our time to see you again.
Happy Birthday Matt, Much love til we meet again.

Matt was a good friend of mine at WSU. We were in band together, mountain biked, and went skiing on many occasions. He was one of those rare people that made you want to do better and be better. His smile and positive outlook were contagious and inspiring. I regret losing touch with him and learning of his passing only a few years ago. May God bless his family.
