Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Sergeant Joseph Dan Adams

Another year has passed. So many people have come into our family through marriage and nieces and nephews since Joe left this world. We share many stories and pictures so each new family member has come to know him. He is loved and remembered each day. His memory lives with us and we feel so thankful to feel him near so often.
We as a family continue to love and respect the many officers who protect our neighborhoods and cities with watchful care each day. We sincerely thank each of you for your service, and pray for your safety as you serve.

Joe, I never got the chance to meet you but wish I had. I like to talk to the guys you worked with and hear their stories. By their stories I can tell you were a great husband, father and officer. You will never be forgotten.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Hey Officer Joe,
I just wanted to let you know that you are not forgotten. My dad works with Orem so I'm in the station a lot. They havn't forgotten you. They all love you. So do I. You were an amazing officer. Before you left, I always thought I wanted to become a Police Officer. Since then, I know I want to become a Police Officer. You are my hero.

God Bless,
BillyAnne

Joe, I can't believe it has been over six years since you were taken from your family. It is a tribute to the life you lived and an honor to your family that your actions in this life have had such a lasting effect on so many people. I know that there is seldom a day that goes by that I don't think about all the fun times on patrol. You were a great cop and a better friend. Time has progressed and lives have gone on but I think it is fitting and deserved honor for these posts to be left by those who were close to you and others who never knew you but wish they had after listening to others talk so highly of you. I miss you buddy, you will never be forgotten as an officer or as a friend.

Officer Adams-I visit this site often as it is training for me and a daily reminder of the dangers WE police officers face. After reading how you were taken from us, it sent chills down my spine. I am a traffic enforcement officer in the metro Chicago area and have arrested several traffic offenders, in what WE all feel is routine in our duties, obviously can turn so tragic. I am dedicating my next shift on 8-5-07 in your honor. I have printed your picture and your agency patch, as I will carry them in my uniform pocket during my tour. Thank you for your service...you are a HERO! God Bless Your Family. RIP Brother in Blue.

My thoughts are with your loved ones on this 6th anniversary of your EOW. I know there has not been a day over the past 6 years that you have not been thought of by those that love you dearly. I know the pain your mother feels and know that her thoughts are of you when she awakes each morning and also again right before she goes to sleep at night. We know how much you loved being a police officer and get some solace knowing that you died doing something you loved so much. Continue to watch over your loved ones, come to them in their dreams in vivid color to let them know you are near them. You are a true hero and heroes never die. I'd like to end with a short poem someone sent me:

Those who we love and lose
Are no longer where they were before.
They are now wherever we are.

As I visited Joe's grave this evening, I took a few moments to reflect on what happened 6 years ago tonight. It is still so painful to think about and the loss is still so great in all of our lives....But I will forever be so thankful to be Joe's mom and have so many special memories of his life and the things I have learned from him. I am greatful to all of the officers who put their lives on the line each time they put on their uniforms and go on duty to protect and serve us all. I thank you and honor you.
