I am sorry for the people of Morgan County that a decent man lost his life protecting them from the scum of the earth. I am sorry for the family of Sergeant Daniel Starnes and may God bless them and him. In reading these Reflections, I can see that Sgt Starnes was a well loved, respected, and courageous lawman. Peace be with you Sergeant.

Yesterday another officer on another "routine" traffic stop was gunned down in Knoxville, TN. Thank God that all indications are that he will not be joining the ranks listed on this page. Sgt. Starnes has however been called home by our Maker. I pray that those who have been personally touched find strength in the fond memories their hero has left them with. As for the men and women who, like Sgt Starnes risk it all for us... I have but one encouragement for you.
For ever one person who see your light go on behind them and curse God... there are at least five of us behind you who see them come on and pray to God for your safety. Thank You Sgt. Starnes and thank those of you who are left behind to carry on with the never finished business he has left behind

Being a police officer truly is the toughest job in the world. Hearing of another brother killed in the line of duty makes it that much tougher. But we continue to go out there do our job, do it well and keep the memory of our fallen brothers with us. Sarge, everytime we go out there on the street your memory will be with us..may we all be blessed with your strenghth and courage...god bless

I feel sick when I check this page and another Brother in Blue has fallen. God bless you, your family, and your friends. Although a senseless act, you are a hero and did NOT die in vain. In big cities, we wear our vests everyday. Maybe some of our smaller town brothers will think about this before leaving for duty without theirs. It can only help.

It's just a cop

The funeral line was long
There are an awful lot of cars
Folks came out of restaurants
They came out of the bars

The workers at the construction sites
All let their hammers drop
Someone asked "What's all this for?"
And they said "Aw, just a cop."

Some chuckled at the passing cars
Some shed a silent tear
Some people said, "It's stupid."
"All these policemen here."

"How come they aren't out fighting crime?"
"Or in a doughnut shop?"
"Sure is a lot of trouble,
For someone who's just a cop."

They blocked the intersections
They blocked the interstate
People yelled and cursed,
"It's gonna make me late!"

"This really is ridiculous!"
"They're making us all stop!"
"It seems they sure are wasting time,
On someone who's just a cop."

Into the cemetery now
The slow procession comes
The woeful Taps is slowly played
There's a loud salute from guns

The graveyard workers shake their heads
"This service is a flop!"
"There are lots of good words wasted,
On someone who's just a cop."

Yeah, just a cop to most folks
Did his duty everyday
Trying to protect us
'Til they took his life away

And when he got to Heaven
St. Peter put him at the top
An angel asked, "Who was that?"
St. Peter said "Aw, just a cop!"

The Judgment:

The officer stood and faced his God
Which must always come to pass
He hoped his shoes were shining
As brightly as his brass

"Step forward now, Officer,
How shall I deal with you?"
"Have you always turned the other cheek?
And to your faith been true?"

The officer squared his shoulder and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
Can't always be a saint!"

"I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was rough,
And sometimes I've been violent
Because the streets are tough!"

"But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep!
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills were steep."

"And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I wept an unmanly tear."

"I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fear!"

"If you've a place for me here, Lord
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne,
Where the saints often trod,
As the officer waited quietly
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, Officer,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets
You've done your time in Hell!"
=========================================

You might be "Just a cop" to some of those you protected, but to those of us in the know, you are a brother....and will ALWAYS be remembered in our thoughts and prayers.

Another Officer gunned down by a coward, because he was a Cop who was doing his job. The Coward gets hit seven times and lives the Sergeant 4 times and dies. Sometimes I wonder if its true what they say, a Cop can get shot in the finger and die, a coward can get shot in the head and live. Its not right, we're not suppose to get killed for protecting society. My condolences to Sergeant Starnes family and all his fellow Officers in Morgan County. Rest In peace In The Thin Blue Sky

For all of you who did not know Deputy Starnes, you should know one thing; he has a wonderful reputation for being a man with a big smile and even bigger heart, and that is one thing that will continue on. He was a man whose legacy of kindness and love will live on through his sons, Dustin and Ryan, and they honor him in the way that they continue to carry themselves. My heart goes out to both of you and to your mom. Our loss is great, but yours is greater. Know that you have not only your tight knit community behind you, but also your family in law enforcement! Our thoughts and prayers are with you!

Immortality
Do not stand by my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am a diamond glint on snow
I am the sunlight on unripened grain
I am the gentle Autumn rain

When you awake in the morning, hush
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there
I did not die

To the family of Sergeant Daniel Starnes
I can not imagine what you must be going through right now.
It was my department and my officers that responded to the burglary at M C Sports where the suspect stole the weapons used against Sgt. Starnes. I know that we can not predict the future but all of us here wish that we could have some how captured the suspect before he got away and caused the terrible tragedy that you must now deal with today. I speak for all from the Bloomington Police Department when I say that Sgt. Starnes IS a HERO...he is a hero to all of us. May God bless you Sgt. Starnes.
