Reflections for Chief of Police Cecil F. Gurr

Chief,
You cross my mind so often. It doesn't seem that it has been this long since you left. It's hard to find a true friend and you were that. I know you are looking out for all of us who were " your men". God's peace to you Cecil.

I think about you daily and all of the good things that you did for our community. It will never be forgotten and neither will you.

Last night I went to your tombstone and sobbed. Everything changed so much since you left us. My youngest child was just certain that the terrorist bombings of 9/11 would not have ever happened, "if Chief Gurr was here." The kindness and compassion you showed to everyone is what we all hang onto at times that it seems our broken hearts will never heal.

I see you in him. He is definately his own person, an amazing and honorable one all on his own; but so much like you. It seems the world still holds a piece of you here. Look after him and help keep him safe if you can, you know better than anyone the dangers of being society's strength.

You're still my hero, my friend, my mentor. Thanks for all you did in this life to help others. I've never met another more dedicated, honest, or compassionate. Your example and friendship will endure with me forever. God bless you and your family.

I have a favor to ask of you. I just learned a good friend of mine who was a police officer out of state was killed today. He was on duty when a man walked up to his car and shot him. There was no reason, he had no reason is what they said. It's so sad to think of that and to remember you and that it will be 5 year's in 5 day's. Serena and I were talking about you today on the phone, we both do that alot still. It's hard for her at this time of year, she never fail's to stop at the tree by the side of the road when she come's home now eather. We miss you. Could you find my friend when he get's up to where you are and just let him know it's all ok. He had a big heart and I'm sure he'll be a little sad having to go away. Remind him of the last talk him and I had about life and that no matter what I will alway's love him and never forget as I will never for get you and your family, my thought's are with you all alway's.
Thank's chief.

I miss you as much as ever... My heart still breaks when I think about you. Your influence is still felt by us. Sometime I imagine you are watching over us. I saw the youngest reaching for something the other day that I couldn't see. The oldest used to do the same thing when he was the same age. I'm sure God still allows you to come down and watch over us. Please look out for the little ones. The world is so wicked I worry for them. I worry for us. Help us pass the test; I think we will need the help. Reach down and give us a hand as often as you can. I love you.

It's hard to believe that the time has passed so quickly...it was just yesterday that we were playing in the yard in Neola..we were'nt so far apart in age that we could'nt play..
I recieved a drawing of you and Jesus, that a lady there in Roosevelt made for your Dad...and he so kindly shared it with me and my other siblings..it was drawn with love and admiration for you..It is awesome.. Cecil, your family misses you so very much , there is'nt a day that goes by that you , your dear sweet mother and sister aren't thought of and missed sorely..but we all know you are in a better place and someday we will be reunited with all of you...I talk to your father on the phone and it's so hard to keep my voice from shaking to the point of losing control..so its not as often as I should..he however is in my heart and on my mind daily , and so loved in our family..
Cecil, I, as well as all of the family miss your presence in our lives..we love you , we always will.. you are never forgotten my sweet nephew.
Your loving Aunt Carol

I was writing a letter to put in the paper here about the going's on in the P.D and got to thinking about you and your family. I started reading the reflection's about you and ran across one from your son. He felt strange writing to you on a web site, I know the feeling but then I thought, it doesn't matter how any of us tell you, if it's on here or at the cemetery, or sometime's like I do when I'm up in the mountain's, it just matter's we remember and that we still can talk to you, even if you aren't right in front of us, your still here with us. I look now at the picture of you on here and remember all of the good thing's you've done and know that somehow you must still be doing them. I often wish as your son you were here to talk to. We weren't what you would call friend's but there were time's in my life when you helped me more then anyone else ever could and I do miss that. By the way, how's Mike and your Mom doing? We miss them too. There's alot I'd like to say and alot I could say, but I think most of all I just want you and your family to know that there are alot of us out here who still think of you often and that our prayer's are still there for you and your family. I miss you CHIEF.

In some way it is nice to be able to write you a note, even though it is only for my own benefit. I miss you. Thank you for really being there for me when I needed a friend and a father. I am doing my best to do the same for others in need. May God bless you and your family.
