Dear Mrs. Cunningham,

I too am a police widow. I lost my husand last August, and like you had a small child at the time. My son was only 17 months old, and I was pregnant with twins at the time. I understand your heartache of not only losing your husband, but realizing that our children will never know their wonderful fathers. I promise that although it is still incredibly painful, it does get easier with time. Please know that you and your child are in my thoughts and prayers.

Michelle Stanze
SLPD widow 8-8-00

My prayers are with the family at this sad time. I know so well what it is like to lose a 27 year old. My son was an Atlanta Georgia Police Officer and only 28 years old when he was shot to death during a domestic dispute. I will be leaving on Friday for Police Memorial Week and will say a prayer for your and your child as well as his other family members. My heart will be with you from now on as we are Survivors of the Shield. Love and God Bless to you.

I was sorry to hear about Officer Cunningham's tragic passing. I often travel through the Vail area, and in fact, I had passed through there on the way back from a training school in Denver two days before this tragedy occurred. Tomorrow morning, I will pass through Vail again on my way to Officer Cunninham's funeral. I will never again make my way through there without thinking of Officer Cunningham.

Most folks from Colorado know how dangerous Interstate 70 can be during cold weather, and we all appreciate those that keep the area safe, especially the law enforcement officers that must work in such an environment.

On behalf of all the members of the Mesa County Sheriff's Office, I want to extend our condolences to Officer Cunninham's family.

Deputy J. Hildebrand
Mesa County, Colorado Sheriff's Office

Hard to believe it's been over a year since you passed out of our lives, but you'll always live in our hearts.

It was and will always be my honor to have worked with you.

I had the privilege of knowing Ryan and his family when they first moved to Colorado years back. The thought of knowing that Ryan is no longer here on this earth is hard for me to bare sometimes. He was one of the greatest people I have ever known. I feel so lucky to know I had the chance to know him and love him.

He is truly missed in so many ways, and by so many people.

From the first day of our academy to the last, Ryan was a friend, a brother and above all, an example. He is missed by all who knew him. I am a better person because of the spirit he carried with him, and shared with others. He was called to serve at another place. Ryan, thank you for standing tall and being the man you are. God be with you 'till we meet again.
