Reflections for Detective William Alberto Wilkins

It has been 4 years already. May your family and friends be blessed with your presence: a cool breeze, a clear sky, a touch of warmth from the sun...Trust me, they will know it was you, and they will look up to you and smile and reminisce. God bless you and yours and thank-you for being our Angel.

....I remember the day that the entire Oakland was in mourning over the death of Officer William Wilkins.

We shall never forget your legacy and your ultimate sacrifice you made for the city of Oakland in protecting us, our children and neighbors as we continue the fight to make our town as safe as possible.

I wish your wife my condolences and also wish that you will come to her and comfort her when she needs you the most.
Protect your son and family and we shall never forget.......

Detective-
I was a rookie police officer of 1 1/2 yrs. when I attended your funeral over three years ago- my first police funeral. I had never seen so many agencies, officers from everywhere, come to pay their respects to a fellow officer. That particular day, sunny and warm, clear and beautiful, I knew what it was like to be a police officer. Your little sister's speech touched me, as a former marine of eight years, your sister's love and devotion flowed right through me- especially my heart. I apologize for your family and friends' loss. I am a family friend of Memo y Carmen Perez (your family acquaintances), son Panamenos de Boca del Toro. I had no idea how small this world was until I saw Carmen at the funeral. I've had the opportunity to work plainclothes, and enjoy the break from patrol, but encourage newer officers to get to know our plainclothes officers so that this never happens again...God bless u and yours, Patty.

I can't believe it's been more than 3 years since you have passed. It just seems like yesterday when we used to ride the big wheels down your the street at the Hayward house. Or when we use go on our little safari’s through the Hayward Hills with your brother and mine. It never failed, one of us always got poison ivy. Your mom use to get so upset. I wish we could go back in time and have one more day like that. We love and miss you Willie. One day the four Musketeers (W,F,T,X) will be together again.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Today, January 12, 2004 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Detective William Wilkins Jr., who died in the line of duty on this date three years ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Det. Wilkins' sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Detective Wilkins will never be forgoten by his fellow officers. As I read about him, I thought of him and how he died fighting such a noble cause. The fight against drugs in this country is so important and it is extremely dangerous. Whether you're in California, like Detective Wilkins or 3000 miles away in North Carolina, when we take the streets we never know what is going to happen.

My thoughts and prayers go out to this family.

Avery County Sheriff's Office North Carolina

Thank you Detective Wilkins. Rest in peace.

I never knew you Detective Wilkins, but know you were a great man. The impression you left those that loved you will last beyond this life. I heard about you through your partner Officer Shubin (retired), also of the Oakland Police Department. You are missed greatly by him, in a way I miss not having the chance to know you personally. From what I hear, you will never be forgotten. Some men won't stand up for anything, some men stand up for somethings...it is obvious that you stood for everything that is good by your actions. Although you will be missed you will never be forgotten.

I lost an extremely good friend of mine to accidental gunfire (Corporal Joey Cushman, Arlington PD) on June 7, 2001. I cannot imagine a time that I have been in more pain, and that was my ninth loss in 14 years. To lose someone so young, so heroic, so great, and all so suddenly...my life is in shambles and I know all of the friends and family of William are in a similiar situation. My condolences from a person who is in the same place having lost a brother.
