Reflections for Police Officer Alan Matthew Ragsdale

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

...Gone, but never Forgotten....

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Tonight, November 27, 2003 we dedicated the shift to the memory of P.O. Alan Matthew Ragsdale who died on this date three years ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Officer Ragsdale's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

I worked for Columbia Police Dept. during the time that Ofc. Ragsdale's life was sent to God. I never had the cahnce to meet Ofc. Ragsdale but from all the great things said about him, I know he was a very loved person. I spent seven years in the U.S. Army prior to me becoming a police officer and in my seven years I also seen combat in which I lost several great friends. It is very easy to say that, "You will be O.K. in Ofc. Ragsdale's death". I know first hand that it is hard to be O.K. in a loved ones death. Only, remember the good times and what he meant to his family and his city. He gave his life for something he believed in and he is now protecting all of us from the heavens above. I was very proud to stand at his funeral and salute him as he lay, and even though I never met him, I love him as a brother. My thoughts will always be with his family. I have the artical from the December 1, 2000 Daily Herald hanging at my desk in my office here in Idaho. I share it with everyone to read and to learn from. May god be with you all

Alan was the first person I ever hired on the Hohenwald Police Department. Even though Alan was only on the job for 18 months his enthusiasm for his job was a great inspiration to me. In those 18 months I never had one complaint on Alan. Alan was a great police officer, son, husband, father, brother, good personal friend, and a good Christian man. Our profession and our community suffered a great loss when the Lord called home Officer Alan Ragsdale. It took me a long time to write this because the loss of Alan has effected me more than I thought it would. I just ask the Lord to comfort those who have been left behind.

Chief Sam Livingston
Hohenwald Police Dept.

Officer Alan Ragsdale was my uncle, and even during the time of his passing we didnt see eachother much, i really miss him and I regret that I didnt have a chance to spend more time with him. I remember when I was smaller, I use to love tootsie rolls, which just so happened to be his favorite also, he use to tell me he was gonna take all my candy...I know he loved me as much as I loved him and I know one day I will see him again.... until then I will continue to be here for his wife (my aunt) and his son Aren. He is turning out to be a good person. I look at Aren and I see Alan all over again. sometimes it makes me laugh. I will always love you uncle Alan and I will see you soon..

To Ms. Ragsdale:
My name is Lt. Mike Hansel of the Newport Police Department over in East Tennessee. I wanted to right a wrong, by not leaving a reflection for your husband. I constantly check the ODMP site, but have only recently started leaving reflections. Also, I frequently see your name leaving reflections to officers across the United States. That means more than we know to those who have lost someone. I lost a friend in a 1994 shootout. I'll always try to leave reflections to any officer anywhere, but if I can't, I know you will. Take care & may God bless, and comfort you.

Sincerely,
Lt. Mike Hansel

Sadly missed by friends of Columbia, TN Police Department

I don't just miss Officer Ragsdale because of his uniform, I miss him because he was the best friend I ever had or ever will have. I think of him everyday, and all of the good times we shared . His memory will always be alive in my heart. Friends forever, Randal Simmons

Alan Ragsdale was a fine officer and a great friend. What I admired most about Alan was that he treated everyone equally and fairly. I remember when Alan was working security for the memorial park and each time I talked to him all he could talk about, was trying to get on the police deptartment. Then the day finally came and it was trully the highlight of his life. Alan was an inspiration to me as well as others. I hope that the people who read this and knew Alan, know that he would do it all again. As Sgt. James Brown stated the day of Alan's funeral, Alan's only reply would have been "I was just doing my job".

Agent Joe Ashmore
21st Judicial Drug/Violent Crime Task Force

For those of you who didn't know Alan I've known him since I was little. He was very caring and thoughtful when it come to other people he always put them first to try to help them. I remember when i was little he was my baseball coach and always treated everyone equally and was always trying to make all the players better. Myself and Alan used to sit and talk about one day when I would get on the force with him and how we were going to try to help everyone. Well Alan I'm on the force now and I'm going to use the same attitude you did because it always seemed to help. When I was in the academy you touched alot of the instructors there because they all talked about you all the time. Alan I know you are in a far better place and we'll meet again someday. You will always be in my heart and sadly missed by everyone.
