Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Patrolman Clayton Wayne "Scooby" Hicks, Jr.

Clayton and I would hangout and do everything together. We were also teammates on the US Air Force Track Team of 1994. We shared allot of southern down home memories and talked about one day moving back down south to try and make a difference in our old neighborhoods. I commend Clayton for his courage and loyalty to his hometown of Memphis. You lost your life trying to support what you stood for and I stand here today and cry your tears for you. I love you Clayton and I pray for that GOD will strengthen your family in the future. I wish many more people had the heart and perseverance you had. I love you much DJ Scooby. Mike Mike

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"
REST IN PEACE!

hi scooby... I never knew this reflection existed... I still remember like yesterday when we were in the academy and i would ask you to shine my boots and you would just smile and tell me "you better learn how to shine your own boots". On Monday you would bring my boots back so shiny, i would smile and hug you. I remember when we would study together, for 2 hours before a test.. afterwards we would talk and laugh and be so hungry. My Blue Angel, I really miss you and I think about you ofen...Kiss my grandson for me and tell him that i love and miss him too....

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Scooby was a close friend. We served together in Germany in the USAF and both went into law enforcement in the "civilian" world. I lost contact with him after leaving Germany and was never able to re-establish contact with him before he passed, although I tried. I have thought about Scooby quite often ever since and feel a deep sense of loss. I know he loved his family and always bragged of his brother. Scooby, you are truly a hero and will never be forgotten. God bless the Hicks' family.

Scooby and I served together in Germany. We went through a lot of good and bad times together and with the life of the military being what it is. We lost track through PCS moves and deployments. He thrived on "Carpe Diem", loved his country, family, little brother, and friends. May we serve together once again at the side of our lord. Blessed are the peace makers.....

As time goes by, and I observe the endless and countless violent acts that men do to one another, I always ask myself the same question...Its the same question that I put on the other reflections that I have left to my fallen brothers and sisters as well....Its the question that no one seems to have an answer to...especially the the wrong doers..........Here's the million dollar question.....WHAT DOES IS TAKE????????? WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO CHANGE THE ESSENCE OF MANS THINKING?????Unfortunatly, I never got to meet my brother Officer Clayton Wayne Hicks Jr., but his picture is in my mind all the same........This brother just went out to enjoy himself off duty, when he was recognized by a female who COULD HAVE arrested her in a prior incident.....but he didnt........maybe she could have thanked him or asked him how she could possibly get some help or counseling, but instead, she incites an issue which ended in us losing a life.....a life that risked his own on a daily basis.......what did she do for a living......(just curious).......wonder if she would be up to the task......Anyway........people....when is enough enough. We must stop and think...we are adults. These are adults who have the capacity to think and make better decisions, but are not. At this time Iam at a lost for words. I didnt know him, but I feel something that I probably shouldnt feel...I miss my brother I never knew...His picture stands out in my mind, and it pains my heart knowing what happen to him....Thank GOD......My brother is with the real CHIEF OF POLICE know(GOD)...Save a place for me bro.......We love you man...Peace..
