I came across this sight while surfing the web. Jeff was the only person I looked for. I knew Jeff by face and not by name. I was one of the firefighters that tried to save Jeff's life. Once we had Jeff out of the car we loaded Jeff onto Pedro a search and rescue helecopter from MCAS Cherry Point,I was sure that I would see Jeff again. When I saw a picture of Jeff in the news paper I was floored, I new who Jeff was. As a firefighter I try not to look at the face of a person when I am trying to save their life. That night I was trying to save the life of a fellow brother, I did not look at his face. The firefighters and Medics from # 7 Twp FD, #6 Twp FD, Rescue 20, and Craven EMS worked very hard to save Jeff, but the Lord had already made plans for one of nicest people one could know. I ride by that sight everyday on the way to work and often say a prayer for Jeff and his family. Theres a lot of horse playing between firefighter and cops. We both have a job that is hard on familys but normally has a good reward in the end. We can all say that we helped someone. Jeff did that from the time he entered the Marine Corps and then decided to become a cop. It takes a special person to both. Yor are missed Jeff.

Ssgt. Matheny was my platoon sgt while serving with 3rd Laam Bn, Alpha Battery in April of 1988. He was a great person, dedicated Marine and someone that we all looked up to. I express my sincere condolences to the family, I am just learing of this terrible news through another Marine who was also in Ssgt Matheny's platoon with me. Rest in Peace Marine, God Bless your family.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Craven-135? I was thinking about you tonight, brother. After I got off work this evening 30 shift had a chase. Some moron comitted an armed robbery in Havelock and he decided to run from HPD on US-70 westbound from Havelock
right into the entire shift waiting on him near Carolina Pines not far from that spot. Anyway, 134 dropped the spike strips on him, and the perp wrecked right at Mexican Imports. I rode down there and passed the scene, it looked like something right out of COPS.You would have loved it. Thanks for looking out after everybody, no one was hurt.
After I passed the cluster bust I hadda go down to Riverdale to turn around. Thats when I realized I was close to....close to that place. I miss you, bro...

Hey dad. I've been thinking about you everyday lately. I miss you. Life has been going pretty well but it saddens me to know you aren't here. Zack and I are getting married in October. I don't know how I'm going to hold my emotions back knowing you won't be there. I know you'll watch over us but I can't help but to want you physically there. Payten has gotten so big. Now I know what a handful I must have been. I can't complain though. I love every moment of being her mommy. The boys are doing well. You would be very proud of them. They both seem to be following in your footsteps. I love you and miss you.

Dad, when you left this world I didn’t know what to do
It was by the grace of God that I actually made it threw
So many memories you missed ..don’t know how bad I wanted you here
But in my heart and soul dad, I always knew you were near
For you are with me all the time, every second of the day
I love the joy you put in my heart dad, please never go away
Cant wait till that day dad…the day I get to see you again
Not only are you a father to me, but also my best friend
For the days your not with us dad, it just hurts us more and more
Why cant you come back dad, Why cant you be here anymore?
I’m missing you all the time, there’s not a second your not in my mind
Dad I wish you could be with me, just for one more last time.
So many memories your going to miss, the grandchildren, the wife
Watching your son grow up, and step forward in this military life.
For you are my guardian, my father, my friend
You will be in my heart forever dad, till its time for my life to end…

R.I.P Dad…I love you and Always miss you ,Always and Forever

Wow!?!? I just went web surfing to look up anything on my old USMC Battalion and I come across this. Sgt. Matheny was a Platoon Sgt. of mine when we were both back at 3dLAAMBn, Alpha Btry (First to Fire!!!) in the early 80's. I am saddened to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family. ~ Semper Fi Sgt. Matheny ~
