Dad,

I can't believe it's been 14 years since you have been gone. It is crazy all the stuff you have missed out on. I know you were on the other side of my arm walking down the aisle with mom when I got married. I so wish I got to dance with you. You would absolutely love Dave! Mom says Dave reminds her of you all the time. I love to hear that. It kills me to know you missed out on so much; my wedding, the birth of Liam, your first grand baby who you would absolutely love to death..so much more. I hope you are proud of us all. We miss you so very much Dad!! Please watch over Dave as he patrols and please always watch over us all, especially mom. We love you so very much and miss you more than anything<3 xoxo

I met your family shortly after your accident and I continue to learn from them today. You couldn't have married a better woman and your kids couldn't be more beautiful. I was young when you passed and your family's strength confused me. As I grew up with your children and watched them thrive for success my confusion became inspiration. The five of them put everything they have into everything they do to make you proud. As I'm sure you know, you're wife is amazing. Over the years she has taught me to make the best out of poor situations and has treated me as one of her own. It seems as if there is no such thing as love in my day and age which makes it hard to open up to people. The look in Kim's eyes when she speaks of you tells me that love can exist. She tells me you were soulmates and I have never beloved anything more. Though we never got the chance to speak, it seems we've met. I've met you through stories and pictures and through your family. Your spirit lives strong in them and they know you are smiling down on them.

I knew Dan in the Massasoit Community College days, he was a good guy. The callous woman who did this did not see the correct justice and the judge refused to give Dan's father the respect he deserved! Rest in peace brother.

Sgt. McCarthy, it's almost 10 years since your life was taken in a tragic accident. It's the type of duty we've all done at one time or another and when something like this happens, and it DOES happen, it makes us all stop and think.

The reflections left by your family and colleagues speak volumes of the type of person you were. I know you never truly left your family and I'm sure they feel your presence every now and then.

God Bless and may you continue to Rest in Peace, Brother.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
