Reflections for Trooper Randall Wade Vetter

I will always remember that terrible call of "Officer down" as it came across my father's scanner. It makes you numb and sick at the same time. As the sister to a law enforcement officer, my heart goes out to you and your family. Trooper Vetter was a very respected and honorable officer. May you find comfort in knowing so many people were effected by his loss.

January 28, 2006

To the family of Trooper Vetter, I wish to offer my sincere condolences on your incredible loss. Please know that his sacrifice is helping to protect police officers across our nation. God bless you all and I am comforted to know that this brave warrior is looking down on us from heaven.

To the family this officer left behind,
I myself am currently a police cadet in texas, and today we watched a training video on lethal force. unfortunately the incident with trooper vetter was one of the scenarios we had to watch, we saw the entire act caught on his dash board camera. i want the family to know that even after his death he is teaching future police officers a valuable lesson about the job that will ensure the survival of countless future officers. I salute you for your service to our state, my home and my safety. rest in peace brother, you will never be forgotten.

My name is Marty Brhel. I retired from the Riverside County District Attorney's office as a criminal prosecutor in November 2000, and am now the Trust Administrator for the RSA Legal Defense Trust.

Among other assignments, I was the Deputy-in-Charge of the Major Narcotic Violator Program for the Eastern Division of our county for 37 months at the end of my career.

That's a huge piece of real estate, which runs from just west of Palm Springs, approximately 100 miles east all the way to the Arizona border.

As a prosecutor, despite continuing criticism from the brass in my office, I regularly went on lots and lots of police ride-alongs with every agency that sent us cases for prosecution.

In fact, I still go on ride-alongs.

The absolute worst part of my job was burying my friends who made the ultimate sacrifice so the rest of society could be a bit safer.

On Tuesday, December 13, we honored another fallen friend, Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Bruce Kevin Lee who was beaten to death by a drug-crazed psycho when he responded to a domestic violence call.

We did so by dedicating the portion of Highway 111 which runs from the Indio city limits west through the city of La Quinta to the Indian Wells city limits.

The highway is now designated with signs from CalTrans that read "Deputy Bruce Lee Memorial Highway." As you might expect, the dedication ceremony was attended by local dignitaries, politicians, citizens, members of the Sheriff's command staff, and rank and file deputies and officers from other agencies. I, too, was there on behalf of RSA, and because Bruce was my friend.

If it hasn't already been done, perhaps the portion of the freeway that is visible in the tragic video of Randy Wade's murder could be similarly dedicated to honor his memory.

Should local L.E. need assistance with such a project, I'd be more than happy to offer counsel, from what I learned as a part of the planning committee headed up by RSO Dep. Larry Sherman and his dispatcher wife, Nancy, that was the spark that resulted in the highway renaming.

In the meantime, to all my brothers and sisters in arms, be well and stay safe.

I just watched the video of your fateful last encounter with the scumbag who took your life. It is a lesson to all law enforcement officers that anyone can take your life at anytime. I pray for you and ask you watch over your brothers in blue. Rest in peace Trooper.

I offer my most sincere and heart-felt respect and admiration to you, the job you did, the sacrifice you made, and the legacy that you left behind. It is obscene that your life was stolen after the countless lives that you touched and the millions that you kept safe every day. You are my brother and I will never forget you. May I also offer my deepest respect for the men and women who came to your aid on that day. God bless your wife and child. I look forward to meeting you one day.

Thinking of you on the five year anniversary of your line of duty death. Dear God, what a horrible tragedy. Such a senseless and insane thing for any person to do. God bless all of the men and women who courageously place their lives on the thin blue line day after day to protect the citizens of our country. Trooper Vetter's wife and son are in our prayers.

Mrs Vetter
My heart goes out for you and your child for the loss you have suffered. I hope you have found a peace and a comfort even though he is gone. I did not know your husband and only just now read about him on the odmp. My husband had a silver band that he used to wear with your Randalls name, department and eow on it. Please know that people still think about you and pray for you even though we don't know you. I also know the pain you went through and the things you and your child still go through for my husband was killed in the line of duty in 2002 and we also had a small child. May God be with you.

It's a real shame when a fine young law enforcement officer pays the ultimate price. But to pay this price to a low life thug at the end of his worthless life, just adds to the insult. God has a higher calling for you and your in a much better place now. Rest in Peace knowing that God will take care of your family and their needs.

I was attending a DOT school at the Texas DPS Academy in Austin when we heard of the attack on Trooper Vetter. Many of us were praying silently in the hallway.
Days later, when I heard of his passing I called a fellow motor officer at Plano PD who was also in that same class at the time of the incident.
We decided we would assist in the funeral escort and trailered our motors to Austin. We lead the procession from the academy to the church in New Braunfels. I recall as we lead the procession through town from the church to the cemetary. There were hundreds upon thousands of people lining the roadway with signs of sentiment, children waving American and Texas flags. I recall how quite it was...only the rumbling of over a hundred police motorcycles.
Although I never met Trooper Vetter, I want to lift up his spirit for the ultimate sacrifice he made. He is not forgotten.
God's blessings on his family.

In darkness silence of the night,
when all appeared safe and secure.
What this officer had no way of knowing,
he was beginning his shift of last tour.
Should have been a routine traffic stop,
he requested them not to exit their car.
However they had nothing left to lose,
and the shots could be heard from afar.
Things then became so very personal,
as his lifeless body lay on the ground.
Then you heard the words that stand still,
start me a rescue unit, Officer down.
A mist of glow befell upon the scene,
the Archangel in spiritual radiance shone.
Watching over those in the uniform of blue,
they are his charges, children of the throne.
While you never took the time to meet him,
our heavenly Father knows them all by name.
Their honor, integrity, courage and pride.
though none ever sought any glorious fame.

On bended knee, his head bowed low,
through tears that had come and gone.
Michael gathered this Officer in his arms,
slowly begin the Ascension's journey on.
There at heaven's magnificent gate,
was God, waiting for this soul to embrace.
"Welcome home my son, my first Police Officer,
come now and walk with me in eminent grace".

Mrs. Vetter,

The day we had the bike-a-thon from Austin to the 210 turn-around, I was an officer that assisted with traffic control. I had the priviledge to meet you. Even in a time of deep sorrow and loss, you thanked me and all the other that were there. When all of us gathered in circle of prayer at the end of the ride, I felt a presence of peace and calm, that to this day I have never felt again. It has been a long time since that day, and yet upon reflection it feels like yesterday. I want you to know that I and many others remember you and your son in prayer. I pray God grant you the knowledge of knowing how much your husband's valor meant to us all. I pray your son grows strong and brave, just like his father. I hope for all good things to come to you both. I am only sorry I couldn't say to you what I felt that day, I just didn't want to burden you with my tears on top of your own. We all cried, we all felt so helpless to help, and still feel that way. I pray this note comforts you in a time of need. If only to let you and your son know, Trooper Vetter is not forgotten, not now, not ever. I pray for you both. My husband is a traffic officer for Dallas County, and not one day goes by that I don't know it could be the last. I believe your husband is proud of you and how you have carried this unbelievable burden of sorrow while raising your son. I have no other words to give, I have never burdened such a sorrow in my life. I just felt compelled to let you know all of the officers from Airport Police, Constable Medrano's office, and all the others too many to mention, still remember, still mourn, still strive to do our duty with honor; because we remember how Trooper Vetter gave his all. God Bless and Keep You and Robert.

My thoughts, as I'm sure those of other Police Officers go out to the family left behind. The pain you feel is shared by all Officers and their families,as we all know "there if not for the grace of God go I".

Be strong, it is a terrible tragedy that you have suffered,no words can take away the pain, but memories of those times you shared and the life you created together will help ease the pain.

God bless!
