"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Bill,
Although I never rode with you, or even knew you all that well, you backed me up on several 15's. You would just cruise up,on your motor and wait till I cleared, then wave, and ride off.
God bless you mate.

You are a true hero. Although we may not understand why tragedies like this occur, we will some day, when God explains it to us. He apparently needed another angel in heaven. Based on the reflections left by Bill's family and friends, our loss is certainly heaven's gain. And now we all have another guardian angel watching over us. How wonderful!

Brother Williams,

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND. I SALUTE YOU! MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU, YOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES. I THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE. YOU DID NOT LOSE YOU LIFE, YOU GAVE IT IN SERVICE TO OTHERS. A TRUE HERO INDEED.

MELISSA: IN RESPONSE TO SOMETHING YOU ASKED OF EVERYONE IN ONE OF YOUR REFLECTIONS, EACH TIME I ENCOUNTER A POLICE OFFICER FOR ANY REASON, WHETHER I'VE BEEN STOPPED OR I SEE HIM IN A STORE, DONUT SHOP, WHATEVER THE CIRCUMSTANCES, I FIRST THANK HIM FOR THE JOB HE DOES AND I THEN TELL HIM TO "BE SAFE". JUST IMAGINE IF 25% OF PEOPLE IN THE U.S. DID THIS. DO YOU THINK IT WOULD "MAKE HIS DAY"? I THINK SO.

Dear dear Bill Bill:
Reading your memorial sends a stabbing pain thru my heart. I can't
imagine the pain of the person who ran into you causing your death.
After all those years of dedicated service and you never got to enjoy
your retirement or your family or doing all the things you had looked
forward to. How tragic! According to
the reflections posted here, you are with Jesus Christ, our Lord and
Savior. There is none greater than He. We don't get to Heaven based
on what we do,but what He did for us!! AMEN! Thank you for your fine
example to those that worked with you and knew you. There is now a
huge void that cannot be filled, but as you are remembered, thoughts will
turn to your exemplary life and we will be filled with pride and respect
and love for the man you became. You were a wonderful testimony to
the Lord you served. God be with all those who mourn and may His
promises lift all those with heavy hearts for many years to come. I'm
looking forward to meeting you some day. Thank you for your supreme
sacrifice. From one coast of America to the other,

For the family of Bill Williams, I only came across this memorial today, or I would have written sooner. I was so very sorry to hear of this tragic loss. I knew Bill when I was a child. My father, Jim Hayden, worked with him on motors. I'll never forget the day that Bill "made my day". I was with my parents at a Policeman's ball and he came over to ask me to dance. He was also there for my Stepmother when my Dad was shot in 1988. He was a very special person.

God bless Bill and his family as well.

We did not know you Officer Williams, but you are in our prayers, along with your family.

We lost our son, Master Deputy Steven W. Roberts, to a motorcycle accident on March 3, 1999.  We know our Steve is riding a decked out Harley in Heaven and we are sure you and Danny MacClary are too.

To your family, the pain doesn't go away but as time goes on it does ease.  We miss our son more now than we did the month it happened.

God be with you and make sure you watch out for the officers down here.  They need all the guardian angels they can get to protect them from harm on this earth.

Bill Bill its coming up on a year now that you have been gone from my life. I remember each day the things you taught me not only the professional lessons but the life lessons as well. Bill I never got the chance to thank you for being my partner, mentor but most of all my friend. And now more than ever I thank you for the family that has taken me in. If you can measure a man by the family that he has then you were an even greater man than I had ever know.
Bill Bill I miss you and I know that we will see each other again one day. Fly High and Strong my friend.
