Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Corporal Dennis James Lyden

Even though it has been 12 years it seems like only yesterday. I will never forget, your death or the days that followed. The loss and frustration we all felt over your death and the sheer hatred for your killer. It is hard to understand why things happen as they do. I cherish having known you and thank you for your service to our community and the ultimate sacrifice you gave. RIP, Dennis...you earned your angel wings!

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 12th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace. Thanks to your friends for sharing thier memories and devotion to you through their reflections.

Hey Dennis old friend. I was just thinking of you today, and of all the great times we had growing up together in NY. Although we became friends almost 50 years ago and you've been gone for more than 10, you are still terribly missed. Whenever the old gang gets together, your name always comes up. Wish you were here.

Dennis, I woke up this morning thinking about you brother. I will have to admit it has been a long time since I last thought of you. I used to think of you often when I was a law enforcement officer and for while afterwards. These days my mind is filled with things less important I guess. However, I need to say that you helped me survive a great deal of encounters while I was an officer. Knowing you did not die in vain and that I would remember you was burned into my soul. You tought me both in life and death brother. You are not forgotten. I send love and well wishes to your families. Watch over us brother, may your life and death teach us all. God bless you.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Though time and miles separate me from that fateful morning, I still think of you all the time. You were a hero and role model to many of us, and I am grateful to have had the privilidge of knowing you if only for a short while. Rest in peace, my Brother, and know that no amount of time or distance will ever cause me to forget.

Hearing about your death from my parents who live right off 544, it affected my mother greatly. I still have the newspaper clippings she sent me and I grieved along with everybody else. Hard to believe 5 years have passed. But I always remember him when I turn on 544 from 501 on my way to visit my parents and I see the sign, Corporal Dennis Layden Memorial Highway. God Speed brother... You are and never will be forgotten
