I was the last person to see him that day and every year on March 24 is the saddest day I worked at the shell on Roosevelt and he was there when he got the call a couple of hours later a officer came and told me what happened all I can rember was saying he was my bestfriend

Hey Oscar, I just heard about this shooting that occurred 9 years ago. I believe it was your Uncle Robert that told me. I just wanted to stop by and leave a message to thank you for your Honor and Loyalty. This job is a job that some of us do because we love it, and some just do it to carry a gun, but I know you were doing your job. You died in the line of duty and these things can happen to anyone, too bad you just had to be the one. I thank you for your service, and I hope you will watch over me up there in Heaven while I am on the streets. I wish to be as good as a officer as you were.

Oscar I just want you to know that i miss you and you will never be forgotten. You are one of the first officers that showed me how to to work the mean streets of the wild west side back in 1997. I will never forget when we were riding together on directive patrol. We just stopped a carload of kids off of Gen McMullen and you had the street smarts to show me how to tell that a young kid in the front seat was not telling us the truth about his name and date of birth. (by the way i still use what you showed me to catch someone in a lie). But you got the kid out and he was standing next to the car. I was standing to his right and you to his left. When you confronted him about his lying, he bolted. Of course i took off after him. But your street smarts stayed with the car load of others not letting them get away. But Ill never forget the look on your face as the guy took off running. We never caught him but you and I had many laughs about that. I miss you and will always remember the times we worked together. You always made roll call fun to be in. Take care and continue to watch over us. God Bless you and your family.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To Oscar and his family and friends:

Tomorrow is the seventh anniversary of Oscar's tragic death and the day all your lives changed forever. As I read the loving reflections left, I am mindful of the journey we all struggle with as we try to make a life for ourselves...we know that is what our beloved would want us to do, but the heart always aches for the one who can only be with us in spirit for now.

I hope that you all find some peace in your heart tomorrow as you hold your memories like the rare and beautiful pearls they are.

May Oscar's spirit continue to soar and his memory continue to inspire.

Rest in Peace, Oscar. Your valor and dedication and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Oscar, I never knew you in person but I feel I know you now. Last Sunday, May 13th, 2001, I was volunteering at the Candlelight Vigil at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, DC. I was standing in front of panel 17W, where the names of 2 Orlando PD officers had recently been added on the wall along with yours. This beautiful woman walked up to me, holding the hand of a young child, and asked if I could help her find her husband's name. I asked her his name, it was Oscar D. Perez. I looked up your name in my book and helped her to panel 55W. I stayed with her while she did a rubbing of your name and your handsome young son, in his own way helped her. We placed a single red rose there in your honor. I asked her what had happened. She cried as she told me the story, and how she was expecting a child when she got the news. We hugged and cried together. She is a strong woman and when Attorney John Ashcroft spoke to the crowd and talked about you, I was so deeply touched. I felt that I knew who he was talking about. I know that you are watching over your wife and children and I just want to thank you for letting me be touched by them during their time at the Memorial. They have a special "Blue" angel watching over them now.
