Our world stopped that day. My dad was the new mayor of Oakland City at that time and I remember him weaping in the hallway of his home when I got there. Dad is in heaven now along with you Mike and that has got to be a wonderful place to be. I thought of you because I was telling a co-worker of that awful day and I just wanted to take this time to reflect. You will never be forgotten.

I was wondering why there weren't many that had given
their lives on the 29th and then I remembered it is because it is a leap year.
You were much too young to die and had so much to
live for. Glad your murderer will never see the light of
day. Hopefully, you are living in the Light!
God bless your families who miss you. Eight years ago
you were taken.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Our son, Judah was born only minutes after Mike passed away.We had planned on naming him Judah Daniel, but when we were told of Officer Denos death , we felt that naming our son Michael would be a tribute to Mike. We have told Judah about how he got his name , and he was suitably impressed.God bless you Officer Deno and thank you for your sacrifice.

Still to this day, I can remember the cold chills I got the moment I heard the radio traffic of an Oakland City Firefighter calling dispatch reporting that Officer Deno had been shot. Oakland City is where I grew up and although I have not lived there for 14 years, it still my home. The day he was shot, I wanted so badly to leave my duties at my department and help in the search for his killer. I only met Michael once, but from what I have learned through the days following his unfortunate death, he was really dedicated to our profession (and that of a firefighter too)and in helping everyone he came in contact with. Rest in peace Mike, your dedication and memory will live on for-ever.
