Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Sergeant Cornel Young, Jr.

I just learned of Sgt. Cornel Young while taking a "Racial Profiling Course". I just want to express my condolences to the family and to say that Sgt. Young did not die in vain. He is a hero and the epitome of what a police officer stands for, and this was done by him sacrificing his life for the safety of someone else. Maybe we all can learn from this unfortunate incident.

We just wanted to express how much we love and miss our son, Sgt. Cornel Young, Jr. Not a day goes by that we do not think about him. We continue to cherish the wonderful memories we had as a family. On May 19, 2008, we remember his birthday and celebrate his life. We will continue to celebrate and honor him. His legacy will live on through the Sgt. Cornel Young, Jr. Scholarship Fund established through the RI Foundation in the year 2000. As we celebrate his eighth year anniversary, we will be giving out four more scholarships to students going to college, totaling 32 scholarships given thus far. We are proud to know that our son's legacy will live on by giving back to others for many years to come.

Love,

Cornel, Amy, Joshua, and Jessica

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

As a postal employee I worked in the onleyville post office for many years, and had the privilage of knowing sargent cornell, he was the most caring and dedicated person who i have ever met. He used his humanity and status to bring people closer together, and I have never seen him without a smile, a hello, and what can i do to help you, no matter how bad a day, or days that he was having. I truly miss him and his great smile, but i have to believe that he is directing and helping people on the other side. DEB providence ri 02909

I think of you everytime I passed that spot on Valley Street. Although, I do not know you or your family, I do know whatever the final outcome of the lawsuit you have been taken away and nothing can replace you. I hope your family can find some peace in the celebration of your life. Even after all these years I am still as saddened as when I first heard.
