"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

On this anniversary of your EOW, my thoughts are with all of your loved ones. I know their daily pain, even after 8 years in their case. Keep watch over them, wrap your wings around them and protect them. Continue to keep watch over those still out on patrol. You are a true hero and heroes never die.

Daddy,
It is beginning to be that time again, but no matter how many days or years go by when that day comes it still hurts more than ever and it hurts me to know that you never got to experience us growing up. I Love You and Always will. I know you are happier where you are where you can watch over us but i am selfish i want you here with me as usual. But I wanted to let you know that i never forgot about you and i never will so keep me out of trouble and watch over me, Justin, Daylon, and David and ofcourse Mom.
Love you Always,

I KNOW THAT IT PROBABLY ONLY SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY THAT THIS HAPPENED TO YOUR FAMILY. WHEN THE ANNIVERSARY COMES AROUND WE ALWAYS START REMEMBERING WHAT HAPPENED ON THE DAYS BEFORE THE EVENT, THE LAST TIME WE SAW THEM AND TALKED WITH THEM AND THEN THE FUNERAL AND THEN THE DAYS FOLLOWING THE EVENT. IT IS SO REAL IN OUR MINDS. HOPEFULLY OUR THOUGHTS WILL TURN TO THE GOOD TIMES, THE LAUGTHER, THE SMILES.
ONE DAY IT WILL ALL BE MADE RIGHT.
GOD BLESS YOU.

My heart goes out to your loved ones on this day. I know you are in their thoughts every day, but this day will be especially hard, not to say most days are not. You have not been forgotten nor will that ever happen. You are a true hero and heroes never die. Keep watch over your loved ones and those officers still out on patrol protecting the Thin Blue Line.

I remember daddy being a all around good guy. He was the greatest. The saddest thing of this all is, is that even if he would have known what would of happened to him, he still would have done it. I miss him so much as do my brothers and grandmother. I love him so much and is very proud of him despite the outcome. I thank all of you who look at this page and i thank you from the bottom of my heart that you made the time to write to us.
Thank You

I never got a chance to know you but this story hit home when I heard about it. I was at your service to pay my respect to a fellow officer. I had never been to an officer's funeral and I was impressed by the show of support your community gave to you and law enforcement in general. I remember your family was courageous and strong through their time of tragedy. Rest in peace brother.
